I've discovered that the bus can have so much background noise that I can't hear my episodes of House or old time radio (Boston Blackie, or the Naked City, currently) on the ride back home. I don't notice the excessive sound until I try to listen to something on the cell phone or ear buds.

Not to be too snarky, but I'd like next year to be "talk like a ninja day", and for everyone to not say *anything* meme related for a day. (Myself included.)

Some entertaining John Byrne Quotes. Some I'd never seen before.

LONDON (Reuters) - Surgeons in China who said they performed the first successful penis transplant had to remove the donated organ because of the severe psychological problems it caused to the recipient and his wife.

Dr Weilie Hu and surgeons at Guangzhou General Hospital in China performed the complex 15-hour surgery on a 44-year old man whose penis had been damaged in a traumatic accident.

The microsurgery to attach the penis, which had been donated by the parents of a 22-year-old brain-dead man, was successful but Hu and his team removed it two weeks later.

"Because of a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife, the transplanted penis regretfully had to be cut off," Hu said in a report published online by the peer reviewed journal European Urology, without elaborating.

"This is the first reported case of penile transplantation in a human," Hu added.

Both the man and his wife had requested the surgery. He had been unable to have intercourse or urinate properly since the accident that occurred 8 months before the surgery was performed.

Ten days after the operation, which had been approved by the hospital's medical ethical committee, the recipient had been able to urinate.

There had been no signs of the 10-centimeter (4-inch) organ being rejected by the recipient's body. But Hu said more cases and longer observation are needed to determine whether sexual sensation and function can be restored.

"The patient finally decided to give up the treatment because of the wife's psychological rejection, as well as the swollen shape of the transplanted penis" Hu added.

In a commentary in the journal, Yoram Vardi, of the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa,
Israel, said the successful surgery represents an additional step in contemporary medicine.

But he added that careful patient selection is required as well as thorough informed consent of the patient and his family.

"Satisfactory consideration of these issues must be taken into account so that this approach can be considered a serious therapeutic option in the future," Vardi added.

Thanks to Beaucoupkevin for his pointing me to Brandon Bragg's Armed Gorilla Week, and Chris Sims's gorilla with guns. Also that Harlan Ellison is suing Fantagraphics. Poor grumpy old dude. Groovy writer, lame human being.

When it comes to grumpy old jerks I’ll take Ellison over Byrne any day of the week. Ellison often seems like he’s trying to hard to find something to grump about, but regardless of me agree or not, I usually find that his stances come from some sort of reasoned out thought, much of what Byrne says on the other hand is just reactionary and/or vile.

Oh, you and me both, Gourdy! Ellison, while cranky, is well-informed and bases his arguments on *something* other than poorly built opinions.

I think Ellison has a boatload more talent, too. I don't think we'd really lose much if byrnes stuff fell away, but ellison's done some great rootwork in the sf genre.

Yup SiFi would miss something for never having an Ellison, while comics wouldn't be missing much for no Byrne, sure I liked his stuff on the X-Men and FF way back but I don't think he brought anything to the medium other before him hadn't already.

Ellison is also the classy and mature kind of guy who also gropes women at award shows.

I've met Connie Willis and I don't know what's more distubing, the fact that her groped her breast or the fact that he groped HER breast

well, he is 70ish years old.. I guess he's taking what he can get.

hm... on researching, she's like 61!

on further researching, she looks a bit like Elaine, the "oh the cat will get it" period of our gaming.

Gawd, reading the Byrne quotes was ridiculous. What a complete dick. If he studied for years he might achieve ignorance. What does he mean the ONION lost all credibility for him? That doesn't even make sense. I could go on, but why give him the time. What a waste of oxygen.

Sure Ellison has issues, but as you say, at least he's talented, and his rants are interesting.

I have trouble understanding how someone in a fairly progrssive gig like comics would be such a creepo like byrne. diff'rent strokes, I guess.

there are some folks that are just brilliant at mashups. I've fooled around with mixing software and songs that had a similar sound, just to try (la bamba and twist and shout) but I'll leave it to the pros without my tin ear. :D

ohoh! I know what you mean about backround noise, I went through 7 pairs of ear buds before I found a good pair, they are Sony Noise Canceling buds...they kinda mold to the inside of your ear. I had a pair of really expensive Shures, but they didn't work so hot. They weren't expensive either, only 40$ :D
