I'm sorry, but this ticks the hell out of me. First of all, what kind of asshole solicits nominations for mean categories? Yes, let's take a medium where people are supposed to feel secure, and allow themselves to be vulnerable, and then hold them up to public ridicule. That is mean and petty and all kinds of other bad things, and it disgusts me.
But even for the 'nice' categories - what can possibly be gained by turning LJ into a competition? This is so gross to me. I read journals because I enjoy being able to taste a piece of other people's lives. It's not about whose journal is set up better, or who has the prettiest design, or whatever. Why do we have to turn everything into a popularity contest?
Argh. I know you're not the person I should be bitching at. I'm sorry.
but, have no problem showing appreciation for folks that have submitted a site design, or excellent poetry, or even a webcam that some folks might like... if it brings other folks that might not have seen the stuff receiving the accolades, I'm for it. Popularity contests can be ugly though, I agree.
no worries about the bitching or anger... this sort of stuff has been known to press my buttons too.
I have no problems with appreciation. If someone wanted to, say, post a list of recommendations, and solicit them from LJ users, that would be great. But to have best this and best that, in my mind, takes it out of the realm of appreciation and into the realm of competition. I'm one of the more competitive people I know, I can be really obnoxious about it, but I think it's highly inappropriate here.
I hear you. that certainly could've been phrased differently. I'm a big one for non-competition, actually... if someone else wants a trophy enough, I let them have it... I imagine this was all done in the spirit of fun, and hope no feelings are hurt in the process... I don't put much stock in the opinions of folk I don't know, but other people are considerably more fragile.
LMFAO!!! Nah It was for best dude... I also nominated Agent Orange, Dream Dancer & Miss Kris for the chiks cuz I couldnt decide who to pick. Nominated myself though fro most interesting use of a journal for Des Center.... lol I am a bit biased though on that one. :)
no way
