Wow.. just got hailed on, big time. I'd say it was dime-sized here, but it was loud and highly entertaining.

at what point do they stop referring to size based on currency, and move on to sports equipment and fruit? Anything bigger than a quarter? Is a 50-cent piece bigger in diameter than a golf ball?

Here's the report -

methinks half dollars are bigger than golf balls.

that's what my instinct tells me. so, if it gets bigger than a golfball, will they go back to currency, or just move on to "squash-balls"?

sooo, I tried to find out the circumference values to no avail.
"...the circumference of a golf ball which is normally approximately 44 mm..." is some help but I can't find the half-dollar. There are, um, similes referencing the half dollar circumferences but no relevant numbers. But I suspect that they use golf ball because they're more commonly encountered than half dollars. Which leaves squash ball right out as an option.

Looks like a Half dollar is about 9.5 cm, about a gold bal is about half that?

poor squash balls. never to be compared to hail.

When do they go to grapefruit and such?

There's a story that David Letterman got fired from one of his first t.v jobs doing the weather in Indiana for reporting hail "the size of canned hams." True or not (and it DOES sound like him) I like it!

Yeah, I never got that... I mean, for one thing, currency is flat and hail is spherical. Second, a fifty cent piece has about the same circumference as a golf ball, so why do they need two of the same?

We've been getting some pretty forbidding weather here, too. El nino is striking again. Those crazy kids!
