So, Scott, the next time I'm in Florida, we have a date to go to the same restaurant, share a table, read books, and ignore each other?

No problem!

:D

when my wife and I go out and each bring a book, it's not exactly ignoring each other. Besides, we play footsie while reading...

footsie adds the personal contact tought.. you're still communicating :D

yeah. I know the image one is worried about. Two people, totally unaware of each other -- for us it's a shared pleasure.

There are a couple of 'farm-type' or 'old-fashioned' food restaurants still lingering around here. Many more - outside of the city. Tiny places with only 8 or so tables -- yet they are packed, and often have a line.
If there is no empty table (almost always never), but there empty chairs at another table where people are sitting - you are expected to sit there, or you can get the hell out. Ha..I love that. :))

Waiting for an empty table is fruitless...because others will come sit at your table. There is no dawdling around. Eat and get out - pronto.

ha! there are a few BBQ places here that have the same mindset, and I was a little shocked the first time I encountered it... but I'm in favor of it now!

Do the BBQ places there do it with regular tables, or picnic tables?
The few BBQs that do it here, do it with longer than usual picnic tables, but not tables.

Do you have the chain "Sonny's BBQ" in your area? I've seen lots on the Gulf coast..and as far up where my brother is in Jacksonville. I don't love them --they're okay.

Jay Leno orders BBQ from my favorite BBQ place here, and has it shipped. So tasty. The other place I go to shows up on the Food Network an awful lot. No plates or utensils. There's a fire (where they cook stuff) in a hole in the floor, as soon as you open the door. You have slink around the wall, to get past the fire. The walls in the lobby room are blackened from the fire. I try not to touch the wall. :P

Yup, the ones here use long benches and tables.. lining folks up.

Sonny's is this far south.. Tom Jenkin's has better goodies, from what I understand. :D

I wonder if the food changes any once it's shipped?

French Fries!?

From: [identity profile] graypumpkin.livejournal.com
They don't serve fresh fries with Bar-BQ in Texas.
OK I'm sure someplace might but at Rudy's it just potato salad, beans,
Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, Pinto Beans, New Potatoes (which are very yummy and drenched in buttery goodness), Green Bean Salad, Corn-on-the-Cobb, Cream Corn, or a Jumbo Smoked Potato

The only comment I really have is that I rarely eat and read. I've been known to write or type while eating though. I think it's kind of weird that anyone would object to a stranger reading while they eat. What, are they expected to be the entertainment?

I was thinking an interesting poll might be about how people eat pizza. I've seen lots of people eat it and many "styles". There's even a bit in a movie where an Italian woman eats a slice of pizza... rawr. First ever memory of thinking food was sexy. Can you name that movie?! he he he
Her line was "let me show you how to eat it".

I don't know if I ever saw the pizza eating movie!

Folks are strange.. like objecting if someone else in a casual place is eating with a hat on.

ding! wasn't she sexy? no one ever knows what I'm talking about when I talk about movies.

I think they should REQUIRE people to go to movies alone so they won't TALK to each other. I've been going to movies alone for so long I can't stand going with other people. Or maybe I'm just a bitch!!! But really-- I like to be totally drawn in & that never happens when I'm thinking about someone else.

I find it suprising that more people aren't introverts. No wonder why I'm lonely.

Date: 2006-03-23 07:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com
well, this may not be a valid scientific sample... perhaps more folks on my list are extroverts than the average?

Maybe. T'would make sense, kind sir.

No... that's the face i put on at parties. I'm that random stranger you often see who writes down things to talk about. yeah... I'm that much of an introvert.

Well, that works, too. We'll have to compare note-cards sometime. :D

Lol. At least if there is someone else looking as awkward as me, I wouldn't feel so bad. We could not talk the whole party!

Sounds like a plan.. do to doodle on your note cards, or are you a neatnik?

Date: 2006-03-25 02:41 am (UTC)

I'm definately a doodler. To the point that if someone else picked up my notecard it would be like some strange crayon code.

Date: 2006-03-25 01:37 pm (UTC)

I'm a big time doodler. Arrows, mazes, circles and stickmen roam all over my notes.

Random joke time!! 8 and 9 are standing around talking when they see pi come around the corner. 9 whispers to 8, "don't get that pi fellow started... he'll go on forever!"

Favorite mathisms -

Life is complex: it has both real and imaginary components.

Q: What is the difference between a Ph.D. in mathematics and a large pizza?
A: A large pizza can feed a family of four...

A mathematician is asked by a friend who is a devout Christian: "Do you believe in one God?"
He answers: "Yes - up to isomorphism."

I've sat in a pub and a resturant with a book alone while I wait for my friends or meal to arrive. Never been an issue for me.

I love going to the movies alone and I don't mind sharing a table with strangers so long as they are sociable.

Date: 2006-03-24 12:39 am (UTC)

you and I are in total agreement! :D

Heh that sitting with strangers is so not me. Kat and I did that once at a Japanese steak house, we never went back, not that anything went wrong just felt uncomfortable. I generally don't like other people. That thing about them being sociable is the worst, if I don't know you don't talk to me, I hate when your trapped on a plane and the person next to you feels compelled to share life stories with you, I'm afraid the generally get the cols shoulder from me.

That's why a book shield is the best! If you want to talk, you can drop the book, otherwise, you can just sort of grunt non-comittally until they get the picture.

At a restaurant, if I sit with other folks, I tend to put on my game face, though, and try to get them to talk about themselves.
