Phoenix on Wednesday was named the sweatiest city in the United States, but Miami topped the list as the most uncomfortable American city due to its mix of humidity and heat. Read more... )

nonja Nonja is an endangered Sumatran Orangutan that has been living for years at Miami Metrozoo, but that’s not what makes the hairy female unique.

Dozens of school children lined up to see her Wednesday as she celebrated her 54th birthday, making her the oldest living orangutan in the world.

Her name means “girl” in Dutch, as she originally came from the Wassenaar Zoo in Holland in 1983. Nowadays Nonja would be called more of a grandma than a girl, after giving birth to five offspring that have in turn produced two other offspring in captivity. Most orangutans in captivity only make it to be 50-years-of-age.

The old but otherwise healthy primate was given a special cake prepared by her keeper, which zoo officials said was made with a mixture of peanut butter, bananas, mangos and other “primate chow”.

It seems as if despite her age, Nonja has not learned any manners, as she suspiciously looked at the cake before ripping right into it and making a birthday mess.

[Poll #748518]
Why? (answer in comments, my answer is below)

Poll was brought on by hearing that the knight on a chessboard has to move in an "L" shape because back then, the horse had to be turned left or right for the knight to get close enough to hit someone with a sword or mace.

Sometimes I think that I shuffle that way, behaviorally (is that a word?). I move off to the side, and then a bit forward. (or vice versa) It seems to progress effectively, I have to shift a bit, laterally.

It's also worth noting that I am *horrid* at chess... I still haven't grasped the best strategies of the game. I do very well at simpler ones, like Go, Othello (Reversi), Pente, Checkers, and the likeGeotarget
