Someone asks you 5 questions, you answer them in your journal, and then offer to interview other people... so if you want me to interview you, comment :-)
questions from
myid8myego
1. How did you and Newt find each other?
A friend's wife worked at the hospital, and someone brought in a box of very newborn kittens (3 weeks old, if that) They called me up and asked if I wanted one, and initailly, I said no thanks because I'm allergic. They couldn't find a home for him by the end of the day, so I said that I'd foster-parent him until a more suitable one came along. After a week of feeding him every four hours with a dropper and keeping him close to me for warmth, I called back and told them to call off the parent-seach, because I'm the mamma now. I'm glad of that, because he's the best possible buddy I've had over the last five-ish years. He sleeps in my bed, and hangs out wherever I go. I'm really glad that he weaned off of baby formula though, as it made his poo stink terribly.
2. Do you think altruism exists?
Absolutely. I don't buy into that "Altruism is an illusion, people do it for themselves" crap. It isn't all about a person's short term or long term interests.. sometimes it's just about helping people. It's actually quite easy to put the needs of another person before yourself. A person is willing to run into a burning building to save an infertile person in a coma. Or give the shirt off of his back so a stranger can be warm.
I don't much care for the argument. Probably because I view people as individuals, not as matter that wants to breed and pass itself on.
3. Why is your favorite book your favorite?
I have a lot of great books on my list. Dandilion Wine (by Ray Bradbury) is really high up there, becuse I think it's a grewat distillation (pardon the pun) of excellent characters, nostalgia, fantasy fiction and flow. It's viewed from a child's eyes, and told by an adult. Probably one of the best-told tales written in the 20th century, in my opinion.
4. Do you wish life came with do-overs?
I could see them coming in handy in case of emergencies, but for the most part, no. It'd just make us lazy, and it's just simpler to live with things as they come, and move on.
5. If you had a son, what is the one thing you would be sure to teach him?
Play straight with people. Lies and cheats may work in the short term, but in the end, you get found out, and people are slow to forgive. EVERYTHING has repercussions. Besides, it's a lot simpler to keep your story straight if it's the truth.
some more from eryx_uk and mootpoint
1. What is your favourite movie of the last 12 months, and why?
1. Probably the Incredibles. It just pressed all the right buttons for me. Super-heroes, well written family flick, cool design, good humor and action, great music. IT was the most entertaining thing I've seen in a long time.
2. Theres a Zombie Apocalypse tomorrow, would you try to help others or is it every man for himself? And why?
2. Well, I tend to think that a good group can carry more and survive better than a soloist could. If they seemed competant, I'd have to go with a group. If they seemed more of a danger than a help, I'd be torn but probably would leave the group.
3. What is your view on Political Correctness?
3. I'm all for being polite, and sensitive to the feelings of other people, but I'll always call a "letter-carrier" a mailman, even if she's a woman.
Same goes for Fireman, and manhole cover. (I call a cop a cop, not a policeman.)
4. If there was one place in all the world you could visit, where would it be?
4. I'd love to go to vatican city, if I could see all the hidden art treasures and library pieces there. Anyplace with a huge amount of history like that, all in one place.
5. Star Wars... Episodes 4-6 or 1-3, and why?
5. Episodes 4-6, with all certainty. Nostalgia factor, plus Empire is just the best of the movies, in my opinion. I liked elements of episode one and two, but as a whole, they didn't tickle my fancy. Maybe I've grown out of the franchise.
from mootpoint -
1. How much of Mitch is in you vs. inspired by others?
1. I'd say that the vast majority was inspired by others. some similarities on the inside are that I do write notes to myself on occasion, but I'm not nearly so foul-mouthed. I do like chickory with cream. Whole chunks of my past come and go unbidden. I'm prone to fits of upset, but recover quickly. I haven't found my Sally (Note the similarity to the word "ally") yet. I miss my father. I like to play frisbee, and have drawn a smiley on almost all of the ones that I've owned. I fear losing my mind, as it's the only possession that I'm sure is really mine.
2. How would you spend 74 million tax-free dollars?
2. I'd pay off all of my debt, and get myself a home, a stable(r) financial future, and pay off my mother's house. I'd try to start my own foundation where I can get by on being a philanthropist. Focus would be children. I don't know how I'd help my brother, but I'd try to do something.
3. What was the biggest, life changing event you have ever faced and why?
3. Leaving home at 17. Living on my own, with my own rules. I was able to grow out my hair, stay out late, and study or not, as I saw fit. Freedom is a wonderful thing, even if the household rules weren't that major to start with. I didn't feel like an adult until I was allowed to act like one.
4. What about yourself are you most proud of?
4. Most Proud? I'd say that taking care of Newt is highest on the list. Bottle feeding him every four hours, making sacrifices for his health and safety. I like that even more than the fact that I've found a job that gives back to society.
5. What about yourself are you most ashamed of?
5. I'm most ashamed of a lack of discipline. I fall into lazy patterns all too easily. I think that if I had more of a real regimen that I'd be healthier and happier on the whole.

1. Are you a morning or evening person? Why?
I've currently programmed myself to be a morning person, because I must get up at 6am every day to prepare for work. In my old job, I worked 4p-midnight, and that suited my tendencies at that time to sleep in.
Once I've got my rhythm down, I can function on any schedule.
2. If you could have a do-over, what would it be?
If I was allowed to keep my memories, but not the repercussions, I'd like to spent more time with my father while he was still alive.
3. If you could live as a character in literature, who would it be and why?
Just for a little while, I'd like to do time as a superhero. Life as 1940's Plastic Man would be good. Not forever, but for a bit. (If Comics / Pulps don't count as Literature, then I'd opt for older heroic literature... Beowulf, Cap'n Nemo, etc.)
4. Who has the right idea, Skinner or Freud?
I suspecy that both sides have creedence, but Skinner seems more viable to me. Environment is a powerful control.
5. Do you believe in luck?
That some deliberate outside force in the universe makes one person have better life results than someone else? nope.

Date: 2005-05-02 06:43 pm (UTC)2. What do you like the most about someone you look up to?
3. Where do you think you'll be in 10 years?
4. What is your greatest fear?
5. When was your last physical combat?
Re: okie doke
Date: 2005-05-02 07:42 pm (UTC)2. Is it sad that I don't really look up to anyone? I admire certain people, but there is no one I actually look up to. I've always taken care of myself.
3. In ten years? Man, I have no idea. I'll give you the same answer I gave Chris. I can't give any concrete details, because I've learned that you can never really plan out anything. I hope to have graduated from college and be in the midst of a career or sorts. Marriage would be rather nice, but to who and when, I have no idea. I don't know where I'll be living, but I have a hunch it won't be in Boston. I love it here, but it's not somewhere I think I want to settle for good. Who knows. I'm content to see where life takes me.
4. Abandonment.
6. I've never had a seriously physically combative situation. Last week, I had a bit of an altercation with a co-worker (whom I used date) where I almost slapped him. That's about it. I'm more of a verbal sparring type.

3. "Moist." UGH.
4. I took a psychology class to fulfill a requirement, and fell in love. I was a declared biology major, and I really liked that stuff too, so I started poking around, trying to figure out how I could combine the two. I found biopsychology, did some extra lab work with the professor, who then allowed me to take a graduate seminar of his when I was a sophomore. I was hooked.
5. Reality TV. Just... no. Too much narcisissm for me.

4. Do the scary monkeys haunt you, too?
5. What is your passion?

Date: 2005-05-03 09:06 pm (UTC)2. Gracie, interestingly enough. Despite all the stress she adds to my life. She's a little clown.
3. I am not a morning person. At all. So usually the first thing I think is "Nooooooooooooooooo." Then I cry. Haha.
4. The who now?
5. Creativity. I am my happiest when I have some sort of creative outlet. Unfortunately, this is what seems to get pushed out of my schedule when life gets too hectic.

3. What is your favorite genre?
4. What's your favorite gaming memory?
5. Have you ever broken a bone? if so, how? if not, what was the worst accident you've ever had?
no subject
Date: 2005-05-03 11:29 am (UTC)2. I'm not all that squeamish, but anything to do with eyes and dentists does tend to make me look away.
3. Favourite genre would have to be science fiction. I love fantasy but I find most movies and novels in that genre don't agree with me for various reasons. Horror is the same. I know what I like and what I don't like. Yet, Science Fiction has much broader aspects that appeal to me more. Even the cheap straight to video releases. :)
4. That would have to be my first ever roleplay session. It was a single one on one to teach me the system (Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay aka WFRP). It was so clear in my Mind's Eye what was happening, I could envision everything. However, these days (18 years later) such imagery doesn't come as well as it did.
5. When I was about 5 I fell off the garden gate and cracked my skull. Not badly but I remember a paniced rush to the hospital.
Also when I was 15 I fell off a skateboard and hit my wrist on the pavement breaking it. Had it in plaster for about 3 weeks.

2. What is your most valued personal possession?
3. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
4. If you had one thing to do over, what would it be?
5. If you could bring one item or person down from up north, what would it be?
no subject
Date: 2005-05-04 04:01 am (UTC)2) Thats a hard one.. I mean.. if you were asking what would be the first thing I would grab? It would be my wallet or something like that.. Thats pretty valuable to me since my whole life is basically in there.. Beyond that.. my computer tower.. but if it was one specific item it might be a hand painted picture by a Newfoundland artist that I got as a wedding gift from home.. I really like it and I smile every time I see it.
3) Back in Canada, or at least much farther North.. Hopefully working on a family, or at least settling into married life and working my butt off to pay for a home.
4) Change how things went with Jill would be an easy one to say.. but I like where I am now.. so changing that would take me away from Jenn.. I might have worked harder in school.. Gone to College.. Worked more on having something of a career
5) My brother Douglas.. I miss him the most I think. Just having him around always makes things seem better. Not to mention he is funnier than hell.. Actually.. Both brothers.. Dave offsets Doug.. not to mention there are times he comes up with stuff that makes me laugh myself sick..

3. What brings you the most peace in your life?
4. What's your favorite responsibility at home/work?
5. If you were a tree, what sort would you be? (Barbara Walters, eat your heart out!)
no subject
Date: 2005-05-03 02:36 pm (UTC)2) Don't know that it can be narrowed down to any one book, really, but I have been brought to realize (through multiple authors, but mostly Douglas Adams & Terry Pratchett) that however serious the situation is, there should always be something going on in the background to make someone giggle. Being able to find the humor in things is very important - it makes it all easier to deal with.
3) Being able to step outside, take a walk in the woods, and say "This is my office." To be able to look at my life and say "This is what I have done with and for myself, and I'm glad."
4) At home - baking cookies/cake/bread/bagles when they're wanted. And making pancakes. At work - walking around in the woods measuring trees, and soon looking for diseases. Something productive for everyones benefit.
5) This one is taking me a while. Hrm. I would probably be a cottonwood. Grow fast, live fast, root where ever bits of me fall, and look strong but have weak points. Rise above the others, but more vulnerable to getting struck down because of it.
no subject
Date: 2005-05-03 05:24 pm (UTC)Humor is vital! An excellent lesson learned to be sure.
I wouldn't normally ask the tree question, but I figured you'd have agood woodsy answer. I was right. :)
no subject
Date: 2005-05-03 05:45 pm (UTC)The tree one took me quite a bit of thought. I didn't want to be cheesy and say something like oak or maple. That would have been too ... too... something. Typical?

Date: 2005-05-05 12:36 pm (UTC)2) Whats the strangest phone call you have ever recieved/made?
3) How would you have reacted if you were told 10 years ago you would be where you are now?
4) What would you consider to be the best 24 hour period that you have ever had
5) What would it take for you to give away Newt?
1. hmm... tricky, because most of the changes I would have wanted would have altered my present. I probably would've danced more when I was younger, spent more time being social.
2. Recieved was probably a creepy come-on from some guy at the hospital. A pay phone was ringing and I answered it to be kind, and some crazy dude started talking about how he was lonely, so I was nice and let him gab, but then he got all pervy, and said that he could see me at the pay phone talking to him. bleck. I told him that I wasn't interested and hung up the phone.. and then took the phone off the hook slightly so that he wouldn't call back. Made was probably a prank call to a radio show when I was in high school, acking like an old lady, asking for this radio preacher guy to lead a prayer for my sick puppy fluffy, and claiming that it was better afterwards.
3. I'd have been a little surprised, but my world wouldn't have rocked. I'd wonder why I had a cat and was still living alone.
4. Tricky. Probably some mushy-phase with my ex, just spending time together, being lovey, playing and enjoying ourselves. I like being in love a lot.
5. I'd have to be unable to care for him myself, for some reason. If I was homeless, or something, I'd want him to have a happy and safe home. Even then, I'd want to get him back once I was on my feet.
