Beautiful day for the Ren-Fest yesterday. I got a lot of sun, fresh air, and I had a lovely time. Quiet waters park is especially lovely... lots of trees, lake front and cool breezes. I have a bit of a sun burn on my face and arms, despite my efforts to keep in the shade. I blame the bleacher area for the joust.. acted as a bit of a solar oven. I need to get one of those wide-brimmed Amish hats to keep the sun off.

Don't know why I'm up so early, but Newt is too.

This is what gets you through the day. Water. It was that or beer, and I'm not a big one for drinking beer at 10am. We had hummus and tabbouleh on pita with apples on the side. yum.

Camouflaged fey-folk. Foxi toting the "Your don't see us" banner.

Cunning Camouflage here, too. A twig disguises her as a tree.

El Babe-o of the Day-o. Sweet girl running the leather mask concession. Redhead in a maroon dress, flirting. I don't care if it was just good salesmanship, *Rawr* says I. She was my short-term instant crush of the moment. hubba-hubba.

Dude whose helm didn't pass clearance into the Mask-tent. Pretty nifty for homemade gear.

http://scottobear.com/lj/archives/030605/singingscot.JPG
The most skillful knight at the tourney... not only was he tops at jousting and baton, but he had a great singing voice when he introduced himself.

Preparing for some Baton-fighting... A helmet is a must!

One of the girls in the crowd looked a lot like [livejournal.com profile] meredith to me. The Knights were playing tic-tac-toe in the sand with their halberds earlier, but the pseudo-mere girl got her head in the way.

Point of impact shot. It's a shame that the privies hide the lances so well.

http://scottobear.com/lj/archives/030605/renkids.JPG
I love to see the happy kidlets running around!

http://scottobear.com/lj/archives/030605/renjailbait.JPG
Very odd... this girl looked about 25 when I took her picture, but in post production, she comes off as about 14. We were on a similar travel track... I couldn't swing a rock on a 20-foot string without hitting her at any given time.

Lucy, still up to her shenanigans, about ten years after this pic was taken.

http://scottobear.com/lj/archives/030605/slackrope.jpg
Dangerous Dan on the Slack rope. note the tiny umbrella and awesome tree cover.

http://scottobear.com/lj/archives/030605/juggle.jpg
Walking the slack rope in swim fins, juggling knives, playing the harmonica. Dangerous Dan also had a lot of great banter about being a retired clown and why being a major in the liberal arts isn't always a good idea.

After spending about five hours at the fest, it was time to move on. 2pm made the sun very strong indeed. Dan and I retired to our favorite watering hole for about three hours, and hung out for a bit in the shade. I had some pub food (grilled cheese and french fries)and a light beer, Dan had a gin and tonic, and stole some of my potatoes. We discussed why Dan hated Constantine as the worst comic-based movie since Spawn.

Still having sporadic power issues at the house... it's starting to peeve me more than a bit. I need to pick up a new battery backup and then those issues will be covered.

I never read the comic book. Why is Constantine the worst comic-based movie since Spawn?

I haven't seen it, so I just know what I konw from Dan's rant to me.

The crux of things is that his "great sacrifice" isn't so great , considering his health and the movie's theme, and his sterotype of what angels are like didn't match what the movie had in mind.

The rest is all about how Constantine the Comic and the movie really have very little in common and how the actors all pretty much phoned it in, except for the leading woamn.

Love the photo's. Oddly, we here in the UK don't get fairs like that. The closest we have are civil war re-enactments. Blah!

I am going to go out on a limb and ask why it is that America seems to have the cutest young women. All we seem to have over here is right mingers. :(

That is really weird.. you have Civil war re-enactments in the UK, but no Ren-fests?

I guess it's a case of "the grass is always greener", maybe. [livejournal.com profile] bubbles3563 is in the UK, and she's cute as heck!

That said, I do feel quite fortunate that South Florida has so many lovely yound women nearby. I don't know if it's the closeness to the beach, dumbluck for me, or the magical ookey-tookey bird speading out a huge spray of "hot-chick" particles doing the trick.

Nope, no Ren-Fests sadly. Its odd really because we are a nation which likes to look back on our history, but we just seem uptight about displaying it.

any other battle reenactments? we have civil war buffs here, too. :)

Civil war mainly, but not much else. There are a few travelling groups who do knightly jousting shows at fairs and things, but nothing to the degree of what you went to.

Poor show really.

hm.. that's odd, indeed. Folks in the states seem to go gaga for the ren-fair and and excuse to eat dubious food on a stick-type festivals.

Sounds like a Friday night after the pubs shut for us. Kebabs and beer. :)

you would have had a nice time, the weather was gorgeous!

Lucy is a real character.. I need to see if I can dig up any old pics of her out of garb, so you can see just how much of a transformation it is. She's a hoot!
