Friday, at last. The week went quickly, but I'm looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow.

Pomade. Yuck. Not my thing.

Raising Arizona and The Third Man made for an odd double feature. Two movies I love for very different reasons. Sweet Noir, and Sweet Sillies.

Lumbee Indian talk still going on in a post I did three years ago.

University of Florida scientists extracted 25,000 neural cells from the brain of a rat embryo to create a live computation device and taught it to fly an F-22 fighter jet simulator. "When we first hooked it up, the plane 'crashed' all the time," said Thomas DeMarse, 37, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering, who developed the technique. "But over time, the neural network slowly adapts as the brain learns to control the pitch and roll of the aircraft." DeMarse pointed out that his research could lead to scientists building living elements into traditional computers.

A Japanese software designer introduced a robot programmed to chat with lonely old people to keep them from going senile. The 18-inch Snuggling Ifbot, which sells for $5,600, comes dressed in an astronaut suit with a glowing face and has the conversational ability of a 5-year-old, the language level its programmer said is needed to stimulate the brains of senior citizens. "By talking with this robot," said Takao Ohsuga of Dream Supply, which developed Snuggling Ifbot's software, "seniors who are often alone can stimulate their brains and avoid becoming forgetful." Ohsuga added that work is under way to program the robot to speak English to teach the language to Japanese children.

Mayor L. Douglas Wilder of Richmond, VA, ordered metal detectors removed from City Hall as a cost-cutting measure, then announced that a team of eight to 10 bodyguards was being assigned to protect him. The switch from metal detectors will save $200,000, but the security officers will be responsible only for the mayor's safety, not that of other City Hall workers.

Why am I still up this late? [approx 2am]
I've got to be showering for work in less than 4 hours.
This is what happens when I start my movies at 10.

You are a Romero zombie. You are the shambling
undead of movie fame. You have no mind and no
drive, except to feast upon human flesh and go
shopping. In other words, you're part of the

Man Rescued After Fall From Miami Bridge

MIAMI (AP) -- A man who fell 40 feet from a railroad bridge on to a concrete bridge spent more than two days calling for help before finally being discovered by a maintenance worker.

The man, whose name was not released by authorities, was in serious but stable condition at a hospital after being rescued Wednesday morning. Emergency workers hoisted him up to the foot of the drawbridge on a stretcher, said Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Louie Fernandez.

"He was conscious and alert, talking to rescuers," Fernandez said. "It's truly an amazing story of survival."

The man said he survived by drinking salty rainwater that had collected in pockets on the platform, Fernandez said.

The man, described as being in his 20s, told authorities he was out for a walk late Sunday night when he dropped his cell phone onto a ledge about five feet below the bridge walkway. As he leaned out to get the phone, the man said he lost his grip and fell to the platform.

Vehicles and pedestrians are prohibited from using the bridge, which connects the mainland with the Port of Miami.

I love the Miami Bridge.. it's beautiful at night.

A semi spoiler for Episode 18 of Lost (last Wednesday) I have been waiting for a Hurley episode for a while. Highlight if you want to read it.

Hurley is Locke's boss. (Well, he owns a box company... no coincidences on the island) Wacky. The cursed numbers that this episode revolves around are 4 8 15 16 23 42 appear on the hatch that Boone and Locke have been working on. 16 years ago Leonard and his navy cohort who had been on duty stationed in a listening post in the Pacific. One night they had heard a vocal transmission after a prolonged period of static. These numbers brought bad luck on both Leonard and his friend. Danielle Rousseau and her team had heard the same transmission at the SAME TIME (16 years ago) on their ship, crashing them on the island - which was the point of origin for the transmission. Also, The kid is going to most likely get a nice little trust fund from all the backgammon games he's been beating Hurley at.

Am I supposed to like the mainstream favorite TV show? Am I finally a demographic to be marketed to? I'm all for it.

Mile Markers - A virtual road trip to the keys.

Random Scotto Factoid - I lived with my family in my grandfather (on my mother's side)'s trailer on Marathon at about Mile Marker 49 for 9 months or so when I was much younger. 1977-78, maybe? after the bicentennial, before the 80's. Good times. Barefoot, fished, friendly, and weird neighbors. I had no idea we were poor at the time. I guess the big whoop about taking a trip to Burger King once a month should've been a clue. all we ate was fish that we caught, and veggies bought from a roadside stand. The ocean there was beautiful, and the roads were made of white ground up-shells and coral... cut you to ribbons if you ran and fell. Raccoons were huge.

1 year ago - stress, bro, god wishes, font music, audio books, tofu "chicken parm", he-man, owie-back

Scotto, you have far too much hair for pomade. If the humidity is getting you down, try a light Aveda product. I use Be Curly, on account of my hair is curly. But it's a good leave in conditioner because it isn't yucky feeling.

oh, I agree.. no pomade for me... I think the idea of putting any greasy stuff in my hair is icky. :)

The New York Library site looks interesting, but it is apparently one of those sites that doesn't play well with Opera. I can get the pages, but the images themselves don't show up. I'll try firing up Internet Exploder or Mozilla to look at it sometime.

those new speedy zombies make me tired!

Tell me about. I was really looking forward to seeing the remake of Dawn of the Dead, but when I did.... zombies that run around? WTF? Real zombies shuffle about and get you because you become complacent.

Yeah, but they do it by shambling about.

Speaking of George A. Romero, I was reading in a movie magazine that he is going to make a fourth film to go with Night/Dawn/Day of the Dead.

Even the word shamble is fun. Shambling mounds from old D&D!

what will he call it? Twilight of the dead? Sunset?

I think its called something like "Land of the Dead." Not sure. I'll dig the magazine up later and see if I can find it.

I went to high school in Scotland County NC, in the next town over from Lumberton, so lots of Lumbees at my school. Oxendine, I think, is one of the most prevalent last names...
...my mom calls them the Oxensteins, the lost Jewish tribe.
I know it makes me a bad person that I laugh at that :-)

Nah, that's not so horrible!

that 13th tribe has to be somewhere!

I think the 13th tribe is Dirk Benedict and the rest on Classic Battlestar Galactica!

I think it's a pity. (Tropical paradise) + (High property values) = (Change in culture)

I only moved here in 2001, so I think anyone who got to live in Florida during the 60's and 70's is super lucky. Back when the houses stopped at State Road 7. :)

Funny that Lumbee Indian post---My Indigenous Peoples professor mantioned the lumbee the other day---apparently they aren't federally recognized--according to him---somehow I thought they were.

But the guy who mentions the mixing of 3 ethnic groups--well in the Appalachians where I grew up we had similar groups--mellungeons (which is an interesting topic if you ever get in another research mood)(and you might find tha tmany mellungoens share the same last name as me and my family members)

Also--living in the trailer--you know I remember a time when my family was dirt poor---those were some of the happiest most carefree times we had.

From: [identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com
Hmm.. I wonder why the Lumbee aren't recognised? Too "converted"?

I think that the mellungeons might be a fun thing to root around next!

I wonder if my parents were as carefree? They didn't seem to mind, to my recollection.

HA! I love how you typed up the spoiler!

I've absolutly no time to watch the show, but Chris seems to like it enough that it's on in the background occasionally, and I've a vague notion as to what it's about.

Thank you! I didn't want to blast anyone, because I have other stuff under cuts. I figure this way, no complaints. :)

I've been enjoying Lost!
