Date: 2002-09-20 09:38 pm (UTC)Funny though, if ATT Broadband actually terminates his service - I'd be suprised. I've sent emails to their security department with my logs of hacker attempts - and they did nothing but send me a canned reply. I didn't even get the satisfaction of knowing if they terminated the hacker's service, which IMVHO is more important ;)
I'm tempted to believe that letter is just an idle threat...

They have his ip address, his user protocol and all that... NOT COOL. And they know that he downloaded a medicre movie. But what really annoys the crap out of me is that Warner Brothers has spyware that is loading peoples IPs. They aren't loosing anything more than what 5 bucks because your friend downloaded thier movie??? Gebus. I downloaded Spiderman because I wanted to know if I should pay the 8 bucks to go. I watched about 20 minutes and decided nah...not my kinda movie...the same with Star Wars Episode whatever.... spent my money on a different movie that I knew would be worth while.
What a serious joke. I guess once IPs were given assignable numbers thats all it took for spy ware to be developed. Sometimes technology? Very very cool. Other times? Very very bad. And that is why I don't like kazaza, the spy ware. Even on the lite version its there. Its bullshit and I stopped using it.
If your friend looses his AtandT? There are pleanty of other IPs that would be more than willing to take his money and probably would be cheaper to boot.
It almost looks like spam to me, but then again I (AND HERE COMES A HUGE RUNONSENTANCE): If AT and T was seriously going to do anything to him, they would have someone call the phone number associated with the dsl or t-1 or isdn line that your friend has and Warner Bros. isn't going to go after your friend for the one movie that he has on his computer(that they are aware of), watched by himself and stores there...I doubt he has a dvd burning facility in his office and is burning 100s of copies of the movie and selling it for 10 bucks on the street, now is he? Those are the people that should be gone after not your buddy.
You would think they would have better things to do than have someone send that email out. Poor Kate if that is her job all day long!
Re: How big brother of AT and T....
Date: 2002-09-21 10:19 am (UTC)The IP and stuff is standard info you can get from anyone using kazaa... no super powers used.
The spyware can be as simple as someone logging on to kazaa, doing a search for stuff they own, downloading it, to prove that it is what it is, and then reporiting it. I don't think that there's a spoofable peer-to-peer system out there. (if there is, I'm all over it!)
I think that warner would rather sue AT&T, for the big bucks.
I am just sayin'
Date: 2002-09-21 02:56 pm (UTC)I just jumped ship on Kazaza when the spy ware started to jack up my system at the office. it would log jam up my system. So kicked it to the curb.
I am just annoyed that AT and T spends their money hiring an attorney or a team of them to write that babble and then pay someone to actually email it out. There has got to be something better that they can do with thier time and money.
I don't have any P2P loaded at home but man... the second I hear about one that isn't logging EVERYTHING I will reconsider. I used audiogalaxy until they went under. I suppose its a matter of time before they all do. I know someone that uses an IRC channel, but I don't know squat about IRC at all so I am staying away. I don't want to look like a complete dofus!
