Ann and Bob are having a disagreement.

"Clearly," says Ann, "The empirical world is a trap from which we must escape, because it is, ultimately, immutable."

"Clearly," says Bob, "The world of our perceptions is a trap from which we must escape, because it is, ultimately, unreliable."

"Fortunately," says Ann, "We have a realm of culture and language which we CAN control. The more we devote ourselves to such things, the more perfectly human we will be."

"Fortunately," says Bob, "We have systems of logic and mathematics, upon which we CAN rely. The more we devote ourselves to such things, the more perfectly human we will be."

Which one is right?

Perhaps more importantly... why aren't they listening to one another?

*chuckle!!*

That class I was taking (and to which I shall return) addresses exactly this, I think.

Neither "world" can be escaped, nor should it be. It's really the same world, anyway.

So, neither is right, and both are somewhat correct, imo. The difference is perception-bound.

That class applied logic to language and perception (among other things) to make the world be perceived as the whole it really is. It also addressed why we sometimes don't listen to eachother, and how, when we do, we filter everything we hear through our own experiences and view of the world. Pretty neat stuff!

Anywho, I really enjoyed this entry, and actually read it out loud :) Thank you!

I'm glad you dug it... :) I like the concept of different filters, different lenses of viewing the world.

Both are wrong in their way, but I would pursue Bob's view. The fallacy is the notion of the ideal human, and those who follow Ann's view of control through culture and language tend to create politically correct speech codes and cultural revolutions that eliminate by the millions those who are deemed culturally imperfect. The Holocaust, the Gulag, the Great Leap Forward, the Killing Fields.

Logic and mathematics are beyond control. Reality simply is, whether we admit it or not. And so logic and mathematics really have very little to do with being human or not, which is Bob's mistake.

Certainly you can control belief through ceative logic and math. square root of negative one, or quantum theory, anyone?

who are you? :)

Hopefully, one day, I can get them to agree, at least in my head. :)
