Our man in Vienna to the rescue. Dalibor says that he is a mascot for a brand of local cigarettes called Casablancas that no one really smokes, his name is Hudriwudri, and he sits atop huge ashtrays in the Viennese subway system. He was designed by Manfred Deix, "the world's greatest Beach Boy fan, owner of 30+ cats, and caustic cartoonist, especially fond of drawing grotesquely overweight Austrians, preferably in the buff".
I have to correct myself in a minor point, though - apparently, "Hudriwudri" DOES mean something (http://www.aha.at/dialekt.htm) (there's another vintage Deix on top of that page)... didn't know that dialect word myself.
I found some of his political cartoons in this local weekly's cartoon section (http://www.profil.at/export/profil/frame.php3?url=http://www.profil.at/cgi-bin/entertainment/cartoons/cartoon.pl) (just type in "Deix"), but it's mostly about local affairs... except for the Clinton - Lewinsky brouhaha (http://www.zing.com/picture/p209df155dc4997835a4ea19d9dea8090/fe6defb0.jpg.orig.jpg) - can't wait what he does to Bush ;-)
Here's another classic - after lingerie producer Palmers (http://www.palmers.at) brought out their classic pantyhose ad, causing traffic jams here, thefts in Germany, and bans in the US, Deix wondered what the that poster (also available as a mousepad in their shop, btw) would look like if they had used average guys as models *lol
Just noticed that the Hudriwudri in question is located at the Westbahnhof subway station - there's this huge modernist frieze depicting the various stages of the world's creation (the last phase is a huge metal ball... thank you, Stanley ;-). The City Transport Authorities are fond of calling that particular subway line (U3) the "Arts Line"... I'm sure they didn't think that Hudri would get all the tourists' attention *lol
just a guess...
