We've all seen him. On some lazy afternoon when you're flipping through the channels and you happen to get the PBS station, where there is a middle aged white man with an afro to rival anyone of the Jackson Five's. He's painting some sort of nature scene and all the while talking quietly and gently about happy bushes, lonely trees and the squirrels he lives with. I quote, "If you've never lived with a squirrel, you've never lived." What a statement... His most famous mantra, the one that makes most people realize his wisdom, "We don't make mistakes, we just have happy accidents" is simply beautiful. He had a great love for the other creatures on this earth, and preserved some of the world's beauty in his paintings.
Thanks Bob!

Date: 2001-04-09 04:52 pm (UTC)My kid brother, best friend and I would watch him every day after school. It was the perfect way to unwind and be able to let go of the desire to strangle little brothers.
My mom even got us a Bob Ross painting kit that we loved trying our hand at one time when my father was out of town. It was the best week we ever had. (Not a happy childhood)
Kim, (the best friend) is an artist - painter today. :)
And we adored his squirrel stories. Yeah- Bob may be gone now, but we adored him and you can still feel his magic when they re-air his shows.
Happy trees, fluffy clouds, barns, cerelan blue, crimson red, burnt umber... and the noise of him cleaning his brush-- whacacacacaccacaca. Bob Ross ruled with love and hopeful optimism. May the happy trees go on. :)

Date: 2001-04-09 11:29 pm (UTC)I used to watch him out in Denver, but I haven't seen a show since I moved here, lousy area for tv .. only two channels w/o cable.
I would really like to get some tapes of his shows one of these days. They were relaxing and he was really cool.

Date: 2001-04-10 02:41 am (UTC)The thing I always found fascinating about the mystique of Bob Ross is that, even though his material and presentation could be mocked so easily, his earnestness and charisma intrigued and captivated everyone to the point that you couldn't make fun of him. You never heard of someone saying that Bob Ross was too cheesy or corny, or that his paintings were bad. Because you simply couldn't. The man loved painting, he believed in his work, and he truly loved each and every one of us.
In my opinion, he's one of the greatest and most unique people that ever lived. And I just know he's somewhere above us, painting "happy little trees" for the heavenly host.
