Linkers. Not Friends. that's what I keep telling myself.

so why is it so hard for me to trim my list? I'm too dang nosey. I want to know what's going on in everyone's lives.

I want to get down to 50. I don't see it happening. In fact if I'm not careful, I'm going to add everyone back.

I view some of the folks who link to me, and I link to as actual friends. Others, kindly acquaintances. still others as neato columnists in the life they lead (or don't.)

Some of you folks are amazing writers..some have a great amount of heart... some impress me with the amount of truth I see in your writing, and others in the outrageously bad lies that I see propagated... to the point where the fish stories are as entertaining as life itself. "Through a glass darkly" I suppose.

So, what do I do? go with it as best I can, stick my nose in where it sometimes will stick. I hope nobody gets offended if I add/remove them.. filter usage just isn't cutting it for me. I'm also trimming off anyone I haven't seen post in a month... no point in keeping dead links alive, although. holy moly... see what I've missed? I didn't know mootpoint posted. I love his stuff. nashata is long gone... as is cider. see... that's what I mean. I want read more than I can....

I completely 100.6% empathize with what you're saying. I just trimmed my list a bit and it's such an unhappy-making feeling. I did it once before, and accidentally deleted a person or so unintentionally... just know that if you should decide to take this girl off your "friends" list -- no offense would be taken. :)

Hahaha!! I don't know!! Funny you should say that... Greg is frequently standing in my office doorway at home asking why I won't watch some TV with him... and that's exactly what I've said to him: It's not as good!!! :)

seriously... there's maybe 10 journals to me that are "must reads"... but no tv show holds that same appeal...

Yep yep - exactly. I have my "categories" - people I am personally invested in (friends in the real sense of the word), people I enjoy reading because they post stuff that's fun (fun folks), people I enjoy reading because they're interesting, people who added me and I added them back. The last group are the ones I pretty much took off my list, #2 and #3 (fun and interesting) are often interchangeable, and the first group are my "must-read journals".

i think i would have a lot of problems trimming my list. and yeah, i keep wanting folks like nashata and cider to come back but i'm endlessly waiting. what do i do? well, i don't want to delete them (in case i miss something) but if i did do a big overhaul like that, i think i would loose 25-30% of my list. i deleted two today b/c they are in different countries and sometimes they post in a language i don't understand. is it terrible?

sigh. it'd be nice to get back down to 100.

LOL : ) I think you will be the one stressing out over this the most! I understand the need to trim it down - you have a billion friends/linkers, and I can't imagine how long it must take you to read your friends page. (I, and I'm sure most other people, would not be offended if you had to remove mine/theirs)

Maybe Newt can start an LJ, kinda take over half of your list or something? ; )

maybe some would delete you after seeing the post and then that saves you the trouble. but if they don't post often, i doubt they read LJ every day.

Linkers - that pesky problem that never goes away
My latest tactic is to offer no explanation at all, my thoughts being it's my dang journal.
damned if i do - damned i don't

and then! there's those private people (like me) - if i unlink them maybe i'll never get back!!!!

You should create friends filters/groups. That way you can still have all the people you want listed as friends, but just view only certain ones on your friends page.

No, really, I understand completely. Sometimes I wonder what future social scientists will say about the lot of us. What will they infer from the posting and reading of the details of so many personal lives? And what will they think of all the time we must have spent in LJ Land? It is a strange place and it does get hold of a person.

I won't get offended! My LJ is a little (OK, maybe A LOT boring - most of the time...) But I won't unlink you - so if you unlink me we can still chat, right?
I just unlinked someone today, because it was a one way thing, and I got bored with it. But, I did not feel guilty.

As long as you don't mind me staying linked to you, then I will totally understand if I am one of the ones who doesn't make "the cut." :-) You seem to be one of those rare, truly down-to-earth and genuinely nice people, so naturally lots of people are gonna be knocking on your virtual door. I understand there just isn't enough time in a day to keep up with everyone, as much as we all wish there was. :-)

I can't imagine dealing with even 50, let alone 88... I only have 32 people on my list (a few of whom rarely post), and if I'm kept away from the computer for a day, I feel so overwhelmed when I come back.

I look at the number of people on your friends list, and the number of people who have you listed, and the kinds of responses you get - you are truly a pillar of the LJ community. Bravo.
