Amidst the coverage of the Taliban's destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, no one appears to have noticed the irony: that all this righteous outrage is aimed at preserving the graven images of a man who built a doctrine out of the struggle to cast aside material things.

It's not about the religion anymore.. it has nothing to do with the religion. It's about a historical artifact and nothing more.

quite right... but the anger is still about a statue of a man who'd probably wouldn't sweat it.

Well, on the one hand buddhists who follow that ideal erect statues and such as a show of respect for the man's wisdom, and thus, some feel not so much for the statues themselves as the violence against their reverence ........... on the other hand, one may notice that most of the people angered are either not buddhists, or amongst the buddhists in the group at least admit that they know their anger is not justified within their beliefs ... and they're just not that good a buddhist, yet. ;)
