Date: 2001-03-10 07:48 pm (UTC)My junior year in high school, our world history teacher decided that rather than spend a huge amount of time on the Holocaust, she'd just go over what was in the book, and devote the rest of the time to the Turkish killing of the Armenians, and the Khmer Rouge, with the idea that we should know that the Holocaust was not an isolated event. Just about all the other Jewish kids were incensed, as was the Hebrew teacher. Because of course, the history teacher must be anti-Semitic to do this, right? It made me so angry. This was an honors course in a very good high school. Anyone in this class already knew everything they needed to know about the Holocaust, but how many people know about the other events? It still makes me mad, just thinking about their responses. Whatever happened to "never again"? For too many people, this means "never again to the Jews." As long as we think we're the only ones to experience genocide, we can sit back and allow other people to be slaughtered without bothering ourselves about it.
Sorry, bit of a rant there.

I could rant about that, all night long.
