Why Wiccans Suck

gosh
Its scary when you babble about embarrasing things you once *did* and realize that...well, they only happened about TWO YEARS AGO.
thank you thank you thank you!
I really enjoyed that page alot. Thanks again for sharing.
Yeah!
Anyway, thanks again for posting this. I'm gonna post it in my own journal because it so perfectly expresses so many of my own feelings.

Date: 2001-03-01 08:56 am (UTC)I've known several Wiccans, though I'm not one myself. I have to say that while a lot of this applies to some of them, it's hardly universal.
Yes, there are people who "misunderstand" the religion. There's a lot more people who misunderstand Christianity. Furthermore, who cares? If the practice, as it's described, is making them happy, so what? Even if I think it's goofy to assume that circles on the ground and colored candles have an impact on reality--if doing it makes them feel better, what's the harm? Only when they start throwing it in others' faces does it become anyone else's business, and while annoying, that's still preferable to being proselytized.
I guess my problem is not with the specific content of this--which, as I said, does apply to some Wiccans--but to the idea that it's universal. Nothing is universal.
And it's also hypocritical. I'm not necessarily talking about anyone on Live Journal here--but I guarantee that some of people who are nodding their heads in agreement with this page would be screaming in rage if someone had put up a "Why Christians Suck" page.
And I still have more respect for a religion that doesn't believe in Hell than I ever will for one that condemns you to eternal damnation for not thinking right.

Date: 2001-03-01 02:07 pm (UTC)Why is drawing conclusions about someone based on their religion any better than doing it based on race or gender? I know I've had to deal with the "all Jews are greedy" stereotype often enough that I'm heartily sick of it.
Yes, I went through my Christian-bashing phase, back in college. And yes, I still get really annoyed at people who come over and start preaching to me. But for the vast majority of Christians--including my wife and one of my best friends--who are content to believe their way and let me believe mine, I have no animosity.
For the writer of this article to say "I have nothing against Wicca, it's the Wiccans I hate" (or whatever he said; I know that's not an exact quote) doesn't make it okay. Most of his concerns are valid on the level of certain individuals; it's when he extended those conclusions to all Wiccans as a group that he lost my respect. There are flaky, arrogant Wiccans. There are greedy Jews. There are hate-filled, oppressive Christians. But to judge them all by the actions of a few--as this writer has done--is no different than assuming that all white people are racist or all black people are criminals. It's prejudice, pure and simple.
By the way, I'm not accusing anyone here on LJ of being racist, prejudiced, or anything else. Just for the record.
