WOODSTOCK
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
by Joni Mitchel

Well I came across a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him tell where are you going
This he told me
Well I am going down to Yasgur's farm
Going to join in a rock and roll band
Goin' to get back to the land to set my soul free
We are stardust, we are golden
We are 2 billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden
Well then can I walk beside you
I have come to lose the smog
And I feel like I'm a cog in something turning
And maybe it's the time of year
Yes and maybe it's the time of man
And I don't know who I am
But life is for learning
We are stardust, we are golden
We are 2 billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden
By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers jet planes
Riding shotgun in the sky
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.
We are stardust, we are golden
We are 2 billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden

OOooo...

Aww! My pleasure to revive happy thoughts! :)

I'm only part-hippie myself, but the vibe was right. :)

Hippy? When I was little - up until I was 5 or so, my parents were pretty hippy-ish. My dad worked in television and we didn't live on a commune (though there were often a lot of people staying at my house), but my mom and I had matching tye-died shirts and purple vests with fringes all the way to the floor. Ponchos. Insense. In the summer we went to music festivals on weekends. One was called "It's Your Bag". It was great. My dad had day-glo paints and people would come to him before the music started and he would paint peace flowers on them. I liked to have one on my cheek (because people said it was cute) and then one on the back of each hand and on the top of each foot - they looked really cool when you danced. We had a poster on one wall of the living room that said (in that cool black-light paint), "If it feels good do it". On the other wall was a geometric poster that if you stared at it and walked toward it, would make you dizzy and you'd stumble (I guess it was particularly effective if you were stoned). We had a hooka (sp?) on the end table. I said "Cool, man" when I was 4.
I knew that this was a Joni Mitchell song that had been covered by CSN. I knew Bob Dylan songs. I thought that song that went "one, two, three, What are we fighting for" was a kids counting song. My dad very carefully broke the news to me that the Beetles broke up. I cried for a long time. When Janis Joplin died, people just started coming over to our house. It was an impromptu wake. There was one woman there that I thought was incredible. She had long silvery blond hair that she let hang over one eye. She wore blue eyeshadow and false eye lashes. She also wore a lace top with nothing underneath. I knew that this was because "she was comfortable with her sexuality and refused to see herself as an object" and I knew that that was "cool". Anyway, she said "I am so bummed out". I was too.
Somewhere there is a picture of me - wearing a poncho, giving a peace sign. I was all about the love. Until we moved to the suburbs. Then it really quickly became about being middle class. I liked being hippies better.
This song is very special to me. It always invokes intense memories of my childhood and "the garden" I lived in. I often feel the ache to get back to the garden. I have made some big changes in my lifestyle - specifically to reconnect with the garden, and it is just the beginning.
Thanks Scotto :)
