Jan. 22nd, 2001 11:03 pmOk, all you sweetie-pie peoples out there...
My birthday wish...
If you'd like to do something for my birthday, I have an idea for a nice gift in honor of what I'm doing this week.
Think you could go one day without using just plant based products? No milk, no chicken, no creature bits?
That's what I'd like you to do for me. (My birthday is a week from Friday, February 2nd)... It's nice to animals, kind to the planet and good for you, too. If you would like to do so, let me know! Who knows? Maybe it's something you'll decide to do longer.
A good way to do this is to have a Peanut butter and banana sammich or some beans and rice, applesauce..... . (a good scotto tribute, anyhow...I loves my PB&nanners)
Don’t humans have to eat meat to stay healthy?
Both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Dietetic Association have endorsed vegetarian diets. Studies have also shown that vegetarians have stronger immune systems than meat-eaters and that meat-eaters are almost twice as likely to die of heart disease, 60 percent more likely to die of cancer, and 30 percent more likely to die of other diseases. The consumption of meat and dairy products has been conclusively linked with diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, clogged arteries, obesity, asthma, and impotence. (so I have another reason to ask you to do this... I want you folks around for a while longer)
A nice link to vegan fast food is here, if you're like me, and happen to eat out far too often.
If this isn't your thing, or seems daunting... good wishes are always welcome too. :)

Happy Birthday to Scotto!!!
Date: 2001-01-22 08:34 pm (UTC)I was vegitarian for 2 years in high school, but my low tolerance for tofu and nuts gave me a serious protien deficiency that really endangered my health. It wasn't the right time for me, I guess, and I've taken a hard line in favor of meat eating since, basically because I felt like such a failure when going vegitarian didn't work.
So, we shall see what happens....

Re: I think I can hack it.
Date: 2001-01-22 09:39 pm (UTC)wonderful! (there's vegan 'cheese-like substance' available, that tastes pretty good.. the provolone is exceptional, but the cheddar is too mild.
Thank you ever so much! :) *Hug*

Did you know that your birthday falls on Imbolgc this year? There's a neat entry on the pagan community about the significance of the holiday.
Anyway, I don't think I can do a vegan Friday - Friday night is family night, so I don't cook. But how about Thursday? Or Saturday? Or hey, since some people celebrate the holidays starting sundown the night before, I'll start Thursday night, so I'm done in time for Friday dinner. Is that ok? (I'm not actually Pagan, but I like the idea of commemorating the Sabbat. Two birds with one stone)
As I get more and more in control of my diet (i.e. move out of the dorms) I'll probably eat less and less meat. I'd like to see an extensive educational campaign that focuses on the environmental impact and inefficient use of resources that go hand in hand with meat industry. I think that might affect a lot of people who are put off by more hard-line stands.
Anyway, happy birthday. Even if I didn't already sometimes go meatless, I'd do it for you. :)

Date: 2001-01-22 11:56 pm (UTC)Thank you so much for going meatless... and any day is a good day, as far as I'm concerned. :) The Thursday night idea is a grand one! I'm all for it.

some great info here - http://goveg.com/rfact5.html
I agree.. a little well-placed education would make things so much easier.
In honor of yer birthday...
Date: 2001-01-23 12:35 am (UTC)Maybe just a few distilled grain products, so I can get my 1000 calories for the day ;-)

I tend to agree on the tooth-factor.
Re: In honor of yer birthday...
Date: 2001-01-23 09:08 am (UTC)Ok, just don't operate any heavy equipment.
:)

You're quite welcome! :)
Date: 2001-01-23 02:27 pm (UTC)Because I can, that's why! :D
Actually, my Dad's down there, and I don't get to see him enough... and now I have a friend down that way too (just 'round the corner from my Dad) with whom to enjoy the sunshinies, veggie treats and margaritas!!
Also, I vowed that I would travel more this year, because I can and I want to :) I might go to England in March-- just over $200!! Round Trip!! British Airways. I think I have to decide by tomorrow, though :P
Wheee ^_^ Am thinkink this may be a Very Good Year. I hope it is for you, too :)

Date: 2001-01-23 02:48 pm (UTC)I see the year getting better and better. one or two bumps, but nothing that will reduce the quality of the ride. :)

Date: 2002-01-24 07:45 pm (UTC)Did you mean "Think you could go one day using only plant based products?" Like vegan? I assume that is what you mean? Of course! Of course I'm 'cheating' cause I'm close to vegan every day (no meats, except I had ham over christmas,) with my tofu and soy based diet. Yum yum! (I occasionally have an egg/milk now and then, but I'll make sure I'm vegan on your birthday week. :D !! I just wrote myself a big note here about it...)
Its a great idea to ask that as a gift from your fellow friends, I will have to keep that in mind in the future! Good deal!! :)
Re:
Date: 2002-01-24 07:56 pm (UTC)yup, vegan, or as cruelty free you care to go.
I appreciate your support!
