there is a lot of clay in the garden... plus it's very dry.. we were just getting ready to water it!

It's very lovely lettuce, too!

I planted my garden bed in hills like this because that's how my parents do it in California, but I needed to plant in valleys so the water could collect around the plants. Desert gardening. Sigh. =D It's all fun, though!

What's your fave desert crop?

Well, if you mean native crop, I'd say tepary beans. They're incredibly drought resistant and make a wonderful hummus or chili--anything that a well-rounded bean can do.

Otherwise, we can grow just about anything here, given the right microenvironment. It takes a lot of water and shade cloth during the hottest months (June through August), but on the other hand, we can grow all year around. Zucchini and eggplant are my favorite veggies, and figs are my favorite fruit. We just put our Mission Fig tree into the ground--I really hope it does well!
