War taking toll on Congo's children - More than 600 die each day; sex abuse rampant

More than 600 children die every day in war-ravaged Congo, and even more are displaced, sexually abused or swept into the camps of combatant groups, a UNICEF report said Monday.

The report comes less than a week before the country's first democratic elections in more than 40 years, which UNICEF ambassador Martin Bell said could offer some hope to the country's child victims.

"These elections may be the opportunity of their lifetime," said Mr. Bell, a former war correspondent.

"It is easy to be overwhelmed by what has happened," he said. "But we owe it to the children to give them the future they deserve."

The children are victimized by instability lingering from the wars of 1996-2002, when neighboring Rwanda's genocide spilled over its borders and a regional battle began largely over control of Congo's mineral resources, drawing in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Angola.

Soldiers and rebels continue to terrorize eastern Congo, forcing more than 360,000 people from their homes this year despite the presence of about 17,500 U.N. peacekeepers.

"Constant migration robs [children] of schooling, health care and the chance for a normal life," the report says.

"And they are caught up in combat as soldiers and camp followers."

UNICEF estimates that there are hundreds of thousands of victims of combatants using sexual violence as a weapon of war.

Very young girls are singled out for sexual crimes, the report says, because of the mistaken belief that sex with them will cure HIV and AIDS.

An estimated 1.1 million people in Congo have HIV and AIDS – a number that UNICEF says will climb as war, gang rape and community displacement continue to rack the country.

AND look the case with the guy sitting outside of the house stealing wireless is from FL!!! I totally missed that!
But I would say---what if someone did something illicit using your ISP? That'd be a hassle and a half!

Well like it says in the article--one of the things you have to worry about is whether you are violating your contract with your service provider. Other than that I don't know that there is any case law out there that holds someone liable for an open internet connection where someone else committed a crime---but that doesn't mean someone won't try to bring a case like that to court! All this law is relatively new since the popularity of wireless has emerged in the past few years.

perhaps a lockdown is a good way to go, just to be safe then... I can always unlock it in times of distress/neighborly aid, like post hurricane.

Probably not from 500+ miles away. I'll have to move there- as soon as I make my first ten million.

Well the only time I'd lock down is if I had something sensitive on my computer that I didn't someone somehow swiping. Otherwise it seems as if the cases point towards the swiper so far. It might all be too remote to worry about--possibly too many what ifs. Hey the first thing you learn in law school is---there are not really any definitive answers :D

Hmmmm... We have a long, sloping driveway and the urchins who live across the street are fond of coasting down it on their bicycles (much to my irritation). The driveway ends at a large garage door that could easily harm a child who struck it unhelmetted at a normal rate of bicycle speed. So. Do I have to install a padded garage door? Buy them helmets? Buy little air bags for their handle bars? Or can I just kill them now and save myself the hassle?? Yelling at 'em doesn't seem to help. They actually rode their bikes into my garage last week...and the one with the training wheels bumped my car. The neighbor caught them and told them to get lost and the older kid got mouthy and told him she didn't have to do what he said. Sheesh! Kids these days...

42? Or perhaps navigational servitude? I dunno if I don't know the answer I usually say "Oh its the eastman Kodak building" which really only works in limited circumstances.

As usual the congo article pisses me off beyond belief! :( It's amazing how many Americans don't even know about the wars there. They're all too concerned about where's the oil gonna come from? grrr

Every time we see anything about Africa on tv (nice clean shows about the savannah of course) my kids' dad says "they've got all that land, why are they starving". Several people have said this to me actually. They are shocked to hear about the wars and the pettiness between factions.

I've never been to jail but I surely do not like Flatwoods Kentucky. Which, incidentally is about 20 miles +/- away. Maybe this doohickey detects where your ISP is? Which is still weird because my bill payments go out of state after the cable company here moved offices.

We used to do this at my aunt's house. It was her driveway however. Her husband eventually put in asphalt speed bumps. So then we all proceeded to dig vast holes in the yard and filled them with water. Poor woman, there were 7 to 10 of us there at a time and she wasn't the brightest. I'm not even sure why so many of the rellies dumped their kids on her like that. She wasn't known for her keen eye. She fed us though and hosed us down before dark so I guess it was better than nothing.
