8191 - the saga continues!
Feb. 18th, 2006 08:04 amWell, yesterday went to compusa, planted my keister in the managers office, and made a point of going over my every option with him as far as getting big brain back.
After talking with him he first gave me the option of using a cruddy-mc-cruddykins video card put in and to walk. After I went on the net, and showed him that it wasn't remotely close to the old card, he relented, and said that due to the machine being bought as a single unit, he can call HP, and try to request a replacement unit. I told him that'd be fine, as long as he copied off my HD first... He also sidebarred that if they were unable to replace the unit, that they'd likely give me a refund on the machine... that could work in my favor, because tech has improved and prices have dropped since Dec 23, 2003, when I got big brain.
Meanwhile, when I got home last night, I blew the dust off of the linux box I play with, dug up an old 60 gig Hd, and reinstalled win2k (and downloaded a zillion service packs) on there as a dual boot. unfortunately, the video card in that machine is just a smidge too old to run second life, otherwise, I'd have logged in.(It has an ATI 7500, and the minimum is an 8500). I think that I'll try to pick up a cheap, but usable video card (not at compUSA!) today, and install it. That way, I can have something to limp along 2L with until big brain find his way home, one way or another. At the very least, maybe I'll convert poor little frankenbox into a game/movie server when BB gets back.. and an alternate newtcam portal, perhaps. Found a few episodes of MST3k on the HD, too, which was fun.
It *is* strong enough to play command & conquer - generals. , which was quite a little time sink. Nice to see planetCNC is still in business. I prefer to play the swarming Chinese over the Hi-tech Americans or the Freaky Terrorists. (Freaky Terrorist comes 2nd.)
HAPPY 6th, Li'L Bit!
