I saw an owl on the school fence, walking home from the bus stop last night. It was super cute... a tiny thing, maybe the size of a can of soda-pop... I was a little shocked, because I think of Owls as big birds of prey The bird looked like a brown and white feathered capsule, with huge yellow eyes and long skinny legs. I stopped in my tracks and admired it for a moment and then went to take a picture. It took off before I could snag him, but I found a very close approximation... it was a burrowing owl! (The mascot of my old university) Apparently they don't get very large, so I doubt what I saw was a baby though it looked babyish to me at the time.

burrow owl

He flew off into this tree, outside of my view. The creepy yellow light looked nifty and I had the palmtop out, so I took a picture.

owl-tree

It's odd... I think of owls as these huge predators, but this guy would've had trouble with a rat, I think. Maybe an anole or a mouse is more his speed. I'll be coming back to see if I can spot him again. I really love living close to this sort of wildlife.

That Space piggy picture got well over 3500 hits over the course of 12 hours yesterday...that's more hits than my coverage of the hurricane back in October, and I thought that was nuts. I wonder if someone else linked to it, because only a couple of dozen bounced through my journal-site to that page.

Made plans to go see Wicked with Danny some time in the weeks ahead. I'm looking quite forward to it, though I wonder how much he'll like it. It was his idea, so groovy. Yikes.. I wonder how much he'll balk when he finds out they're between $109 and $225 per seat? I suspect I might be flying solo. A bit more expensive than the $5 seats for Arsenic and Old Lace at his school.

Pretty Keen - estimate to price of any address.

Floating wind turbines

The Magenn Power Air Rotor System (MARS) is an innovative lighter-than-air tethered device that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, efficiently generating clean renewable electrical energy at a lower cost than all competing systems.

magenn wind turbine

The magenn flying wind turbine is held up by helium generating 4Kw,enough to power your needs. It costs around $10,000, but it could pay for itself in about 6 years depending on how you use it. It’s anchored by a tether that can extend up to 1,000 feet above ground. Generally, 400 feet is enough to catch the minimum 3 meters/sec wind speed needed to sustain a nice supply of electricity. No towers or heavy foundations are necessary and sizes range from small “backpack” models to large megawatt generating devices.

Moment of lyric (take your pick - mov, or youtube)

Is dexter ill, is dexter ill, is dexter ill
Is dexter ill today, mr kirk, dexter’s in school
I’m afraid he’s not, miss fishborne
Dexter’s truancy problem is way out of hand
The baltimore county school board have decided to expel
Dexter from the entire public school system

Oh mr kirk, I’m as upset as you to learn of dexter’s truancy
But surely, expulsion is not the answer!
I’m afraid expulsion is the only answer
It’s the opinion of the entire staff that dexter is criminally insane

That, that, that, that, that boy.. boy needs therapy
He was white as a sheet
And he also made false teeth

Cowboys! bit , bit bitches and the indians and, fron, frontier psychiatrist
I... I felt strangely hypnotised
I was in another world, a world of 20,000 girls
And milk! rectangles, to an optometrist, the man with the golden eyeball
And tighten your buttocks, pour juice on your chin
I promise my girlfriend i’d... the violin, violin, violin ...

Wicked is well worth the cash per seat. I saw it in San Francisco (finally, since it started in SF when I was on the east coast, then went to Broadway when I moved to the west coast) a few months ago and it was... just wow.

Have you read the book?

I've read the book, but I don't think my buddy is as interested in it as I am, so I'll probably go solo.

Wicked: great book. My sister pointed me to it. Without her I'd have missed it. Been out of the reading loop for a while. I always did think Dorothy was rather clueless, even for a teenager.

Ooh, it's Pigwidgeon!

And I love Frontier Psychiatrist! I'd never seen the video, before, though. It's uncannily close to what I imagined it'd be. I keep meaning to search up some other Avalanches stuff, to see if they've done anything else I'd like.

that whole album is a lot of fun, but frontier psych is probably the best of the tracks.

Pigwidgeon indeed! I was calling him Archie, but he was so teensy.

I do like him, much more than anyone else in his party, for sure. (and I don't want to spit on him, either. ;) )

Hey, I can't think of a better person that his party could run! Pimping his book, or alterior motives?

The estimator got pretty close for my place, at least between the two outside values. The last sales record it had was when it was last bought, back in 2001, and did fairly well.

they did get the square footage wrong on a *lot* of condos in my buiilding, marking 2 bedrooms as 1, and vice versa.

hooray for blimps and wind power! I'm sure J will dig it. :D

Thank you!!!

I hope your time out of town was a good one!

My b'day was muted, but I enjoyed it. Most of my plans went up in a cloud of other people's germs, but that' sok, too.

my owlie was teensy-weensy, and it was the first tim I'd seen one in about 15 years, too.. the last one was a barn owl!

ORANGE?
Your Soul is Orange (yes I realize that there is no

orange in this picture) - Happy, hyper,

optimistic. You know life isn't perfect, but

that won't stop you from enjoying it! There

is so much beauty, and so much fun to be had,

and you understand that perfectly. You are

like a little sun, bright, warm, and intense.

Keep it up and you'll improve someone's day.

However, try not to be too pushy and

over-exited . . .

Just bein' nosey. ;) I want some orange in me, too. :))

Your Soul is Purple - Artist, dreamer, creative. You are lost in your thoughts, and have a dislike of reality (probably finding it boring). You have to remeber that every idea is based off the reality you know. Magic is everyware, you just have to see it. Thinking, and creating things, are your top priorities (not to mention what your best at). Keep at it, a little imagination can take you far.

I had no idea he's got a book out. Maybe that's it!

I recently saw Hilary sitting in an audience shaking her head with her usual disapproving look, and I imagined (imagination ONLY!) popping her in the nose. If she runs, I promise to hear her out more (though I've heard enough of her as it is), rather than wanting to flatten her first. ;)

I don't know why I'm so curious, but I am. Just seems like a lot of mistakes between here & there. Wonder if it's government employees screwing up, or if it's the people giving them the info..or if those people are *purposely* fudging the info given to the county for some reason. No matter...I should expect it....and it's still a very cool tool! :))

By the way I went into Comp USA today to see if they had any computers I hadn't checked out--I was going to buy it online if I found one. The salesguy was nice but condescending to me---kept saying that a "lady" might need a laptop bag that looked more like a purse and a lighter laptop. I held my tongue as long as I could but ended up giving him a bit of a talking to---and I even mentioned "my friend" in Florida who's computer has been in the repair at Comp USA for 6 months when he started bragging about their service plan----he just shut up after that ;>

When we first moved into out home we sitting in our sunroom with some friends late one summer afternoon when a bird, a brown pigeon, flew into one of the windows. He made this loud rapping noise, which startled us all, an there he was flat on his back in the yard, we thought he was dead of course, but in a ruffle of feathers it stood back up and walked around. But it became evident that it had broken a wing as it wouldn’t fly. I set some water out for it and figured I deal with it the morning maybe buying some seed or looking into a place that would help the bird. When I get up the next morning the bird is gone, at first I though he might have flown away, but I noticed that there was a scatter of feathers in part of yard, no blood, just feathers, a snake maybe I thought. Then a day or two later I was out in the sunroom one night grabbing a book and I heard evidence of a likely culprit, the hooting of an owl, since then I still hear it from time to time especially on cold nights when he seems to roost nearby, or perhaps he does all the time and only complains about it on cold nights, I’ve tried to see it but I so far his failed, though if it snatched up a pigeon it must but fair sized. It certainly hoots like a good sized owl.
