MEANING:
adjective: Very dark or gloomy.

ETYMOLOGY:
After Cimmerians, a mythical people described in Homer’s Odyssey, who lived in perpetual darkness at the entrance of Hades. The historical Cimmerians, who lived in Crimea, were unrelated. Earliest documented use: 1594.
