AOL is offering a free 2 gigabyte email account for AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) members.

Your AIM Mail address is youraimname@aim.com. According to AOL, with AIM Mail you “only have to log in once to access both your AIM Mail and your IM,” you can “respond to an IM with either an email or an IM,” “unsend an email sent to an AOL or IM address” and most interestingly, AIM Mail can be accessed via IMAP! That’s a first for webmail access as far as I know.

The drawbacks of AIM mail - the interface doesn’t hold a candle to Gmail and it’s plastered with flashing graphical ads. I haven’t accumulated enough mail yet to test out search, yet, but it’s a safe bet that AOL’s spam filters are very mature at this point.
