Oct. 25th, 2000 12:58 amI am *so* ready for a road trip. I need to find a willing compatriot to drive.
Maybe the little brother.
We can take care of some business in a few misc. states that have needed our attention for quite some time now.
Say, how do I take a cat on a road trip? That's not feasible, is it? Nuts.
Ok, I need to take a long walkabout this weekend. Those misc state business folk get a brief reprieve.

road tripping with the purrmonster
Date: 2000-10-24 10:43 pm (UTC)Get the biggest carrier you can find and which fits in the vehicle, and pad it with a hand towel or two, preferable one that the cat's slept on for a few days before the trip. Also get a plastic sealable container (like rubbermaid) into which you can put litter, as large as possible. Buy Newt a harness (NOT collar) and leash, and get him used to them beforehand. Keep the harness on him for the entire trip and make sure you have the leash on whenever there's even a possibility he could get free.
Offer the 'litter box' at every rest stop and set it up each night wherever you stay, along with the food and water. Again, MAKE SURE you have Newt on a leash when you offer the little box or any other time he's out of the carrier.
I tried this with reasonable success on a 1000-mile trip in a U-Haul from Silicon Valley to Seattle, and the only real discomfort the cat seemed to experience was during the mountainous parts. Admittedly I was pretty distressed too :)
Good luck if you do this. Some vets will prescribe a tranquilizer you can give your cat, but we went without any such thing and all was well.

Date: 2000-10-25 10:56 am (UTC)So I'm not particularly coastal.
But campus has a big pond called 'Lake LaSalle,' and it has an island and ducks. My little landlocked friend who came to visit found it amusing.
She's sad about the lack of water, we grew up on Lake Ontario. I know I have great lakes somewhere around me, so, even though I can't see them, I'm not worried.
Um. I'm going to stop rattling now.
Okay.
