Inigo: "Who are you?"
The Man in Black: "No one of consequence."
Inigo: "I must know."
The Man in Black: "Get used to disappointment."
-- "The Princess Bride"

People do this sort of thing to me all the time. What do they care who I am, or what I'm doing there? I know I'm a big, scary, hairy guy. But if I'm not messing with anyone, just leave the BSHG alone, ok? I live in the USA... there should be no need for showing my papers, and explaining what I'm up to. (For what it's worth, I was doing laundry, and writing character notes/sketches in my notepad. Nothing really.) When an older guy walks up to me, and gives me silly nonsense about loitering (Waiting for your laundry is loitering? In front of the Laundromat?) I automatically got defensive. If he'd taken a different diplomatic track, like maybe giving a smile, or asking politely, I might've given a grin back, and had a friendly conversation. Instead... I turn into a bit of a creep. Feed him some of what he's giving off. (A bad move. I really shouldn't deal with people when overtired or cranky.) The discussion went something like this.

Older Guy : "Hey, you! This is a no loitering area! You have a reason for being here?"
Me: -thinking to myself- *man, leave me alone*
Me: -out Loud- "Yo no hablo Ingles" (in my american florida accent.)
Older Guy : -something in spanish - I assume the same thing he said in english-
Me: -thinking to myself- *Nuts. Stupid bilingual old guy. I shouldn't have done spanish in south florida.*
Me: -aloud- "um, Yo no hablo espanol."
Older Guy: "I'm going to go get a policeman. You'd better be gone when I get back."
Me: "Fine. Go get a cop, you f-ing nazi. See you when he gets here. I'll press harassment charges."
Older Guy "This is private property. you have to leave"
Me: "Yo no hablo Ingles"

Older guy leaves. My dryer finishes, and I begin folding my laundry. Older guy returns.

Older Guy : "Are those your clothes?"
Me: -Holding up a XXL Tiedye T-shirt.- "What do you think?"
Older Guy : "Why didn't you tell me you were here for a reason, instead of loitering?"
Me "No Hablo Ingles"
Older Guy, Pissed off. "Finish and leave. Don't come back."
Me "Que? Yo no hablo...."
Older Guy "Are you trying to start a fight?"
Me "..." -folds laundry-
Older Guy glares for ~45 seconds, then leaves.

I finish folding laundry, and go home.

Thrilling.

I feel that if I was a clean shaven 5'6" guy, nobody would have cared. He never said he was the owner or anything, so when my next batch of clothes come due... I'll be interested in seeing if he's there. Never seen him before.

too true. I alway rooted for the bad guys in sci fi movies, because they had cooler or more menacing looking gear.

when my bf left our table at quark's (restaurant at the hilton in las vegas), a ferengi sat down and tried to talk me into giving him our camera!

i'll be sure to tell you when i'm going to a con next!

but i don't think i can ever go to the pasadena star trek convention.

ooooh, leonard nimroy is coming to the station tomorrow. i need to get an autograph! i missed out when patrick stewart was here last time!

I've collected 5 autographs of famous folks on my palm pilot. I's pretty cool, I've saved them locally, but still have Nimoy, Picardo (the doctor from Voyager), Meaney (OBrien) stored on my 'tricorder' :)

other two are - Charleton heston, and Robert Anton Wilson. (7 if you count the mad hatter and captain hook at disney world)

heh. i'm not really interested in autographs as much as pics of folks. and at that, i only want star trek actors. i'm strange that way. so far, i have pics of jeri ryan, george takei and garrett wang.

george takei is very cool. I didn't have my palm when I saw him, unfortuantely. Very personable, and has a cool deep speaking voice.

it would be interesting if they did try out a series with him being the captain and reprise his sulu role. ah, but it's the last season for voyager and supposedly nothing else.

God, that was funny story. I know it must have been a pain in the ass to deal with that, but I have automatic affection for people who hassle Petty Authority when PA richly deserves it. For some reason, PA almost never bothers me (probably because I look like an innocent teenager rather than the not-so-innocent 30-year-old I am), but God knows I've seen others get harassed. Keep the faith, amigo.

Well, I get carded, and sometimes I have to play hardball to get people to take me seriously. But we've all got our crosses to bear, so to speak.

I got to your journal from Christine's journal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/sweetalyssm/), which I found after she left a friendly comment this afternoon on mine. How she got to my journal is something you'd have to ask her. (Actually, I'm curious myself.) And I liked your journal. You reminded me of my friends in Vermont (Marlboro/Brattleboro, '90-'93). It's a nice counterpoint to my cynical urban stereotype life. Sometimes I need people to remind me to be happy.
