9858 - Monday in brief

Went to Verizon to get new phones, but that just didn't happen. Too much "used car salesmanship" at that dealer- maybe we'll go to another location. I'm due a phone upgrade. BHK, Chris and I have different approaches to the hard sell - I just don't want to deal with them. Give me a soft soap, and no moroccan banter... just a bottom line, thanks.

Job Search is going pretty well this week already - Got a call for an interview on Friday. We'll see how it goes!

Caught up my LJ - a little cheating, but I didn't want to forget those items.

Writing project with Ray, Kat, Pam, Robert and others on a RPG / collaborative fiction idea. I'll be interested in seeing where it goes.

9829 - Friday

Hard to believe it's only been 3 years since I was first planning to visit BHK on her birthday. Funny to me how little I can think of life prior to being married to her, and having our crew of four under the roof.

I'm in the office now, taknig a brief break from gig-searching to catch myself up on LJ. Larry is setting up BHK's Best Birthday Present Ever (tm)- a widening of the closet door in our bedroom. For the record, I also proposed to BHK on her birthday, 3 years ago in two weeks. Heck, she'd have wanted closet spasce, even if single.

33333333333333333333333333333333  - Newton's left foot on the number pad says hello. Pye is sleeping on the purple chair to my left, and Netwon has leapt to the couch on my right (newtcam couch) and will be in sleepytown soon.

Here's a breakdown of my music via Media Go -

music layout

According to my SenseMe playlist - the fastest/happiest song is a three way tie -

  • Get a Job - The English Beat

  • The Famous Polka - They Might Be Giants

  • B-52s Cosmic Thing.

Slowest Saddest songs are also a 3-way tie -

  • Matt Lauer can suck it - Michael Gaicchino (Land of the Lost Soundtrack)

  • Running to the Rain - Peter Gabriel

  • Ballero - War

I seem to have mostly happy, mid-speed songs in my library.

I am really interested in a few new looney labs releases - Aquarius 2.0 and Chrononauts: The Gore Years expansion

(Chrononauts 1.4 The Gore Years: Like Aquarius, Chrononauts is also about to get upgraded to the new uniform box. But although it will feature a couple of new cards and a new rulesheet, the new edition of Chrononauts won't be very different from the original. For this reason, and since it's the fourth printing, they've decided to call it version 1.4. However, since a lot has happened since 1999 and Chrononauts is really showing its age, theyere also creating an expansion product that brings the TimeLine into the 21st Century. This packet of 11 cards will feature 5 new Timeline cards (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2008) along with 3 new Patches and 3 new characters who need to change recent events in order to get home. (Of course, it's called the Gore Years because that's what the last 8 years are known as to certain time travelers.). Release date: October 23th.
(Martian Fluxx, too, but not as much as the other two)

Additionally - I'd like to try Apophis sometime as a game. Looks neat, and I have all the pieces already to play!

Hap-Pye New(t) Year!

Something I post at the top of every new year, and I appreciate the words more with every additional trip around the sun.

Love is
is not rude,
it is not self seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices in truth.
It always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes,
always perseveres.

453 entries in 2008. (417 in '07,618 in '06, 975 in '05, 716 in '04)

At this rate, I'll break 10,000 entries by this time next year... of course, some entries are beefier than others.. I've been cheating a bit with the picture posts - still haven't done a breakdown of my holiday loot yet!

But for now, a recap of recent history -

BHK took Amy to Urgent care last night, as her dog bite was getting more infected - worried about swelling and red marks. While they were at the doc's, Shaun and I played Easter Island (I won!), and watched Bones on TV with my in-laws. The girls got back about 45 minutes later, and Amy's wound was freshly cleaned and re-wrapped with gauze.

After the ball dropped, the in-laws headed off, and the rest of us played witch trial into the wee hours. (BHK took that one, but Amy wasn't far behind. I really thought I would win! d'oh!)

Amy, Shaun W, BHK, the in-laws and I rose at about 10am, (after staying up until 3ish) and headed off to Gina's Cantina for a nibble on some tasty brunch. No sign of Tyson or Gina, but the food was tasty and abundant, as usual.

BHK napped a bit and then did some work while Amy & I play Lego star wars / Mario Land 8 on the wii for about 4 hours. I feel pretty guilty about that - I wish we had another controller, or could have played something amongst the three of us.

Amy grew concerned about her issue - BHK went out to get some fresh bandages for her, and if she doesn't feel significantly better by tomorrow morning, she'll probably head home.

My earache also started kicking up - could not eat dinner tonight as it hurt to chew. Going to the doc tomorrow, so my appointment timing is good.

9382 - Thursday

Tooth is still giving me minor fits. Antibiotic seems to be taking it down, though. It was a little hard to chew supper, but it was quite tasty.

BHK went thrifting yesterday with Tina - got some good loot - a few chick-lit books for herself, a kepler and his mom on witch trial book for me, along with a white dress shirt, also for me - some brand new kitchen knives. (as opposed to what... bathroom knives? office knives?)

Additionally, when she got my antibiotics at the drugstore, she picked me up yellow and red canisters of drying model clay. could be handy to make some game pieces, or just silly fun sculptures and items. It'll be good practice for future sculpey stuff.

Seeing BQ.. erm, SaH reminded me that BHK and I are long overdue for a meal at the vegetable garden. Rockville isn't all that far away and despite what R.E.M. says, I could hit the Micro Center up there, too. I'd also like to visit Yuan Fu, which was our alternate plan if VG was closed.

I guess that since I do crab and shrimp that I'm more of a pescetarian than a true veggie.

One of the most nifty game ideas in a long time - levelhead - it uses a hand-held solid-plastic cube as its only interface. On-screen it appears each face of the cube contains a little room, each of which are logically connected by doors. In one of these rooms is a character. By tilting the cube the player directs this character from room to room in an effort to find the exit.

check out the video demo to get a good idea how it works.

Also - it looks like the Ghostbusters game is in a bit of trouble... may not get released - at least for a while. It looks good, and the chance for another year of development might even make it worth the wait.

Writer's Block: LJ Comments

[Error: unknown template qotd] Posted: 59,408 - Received: 59, 563 - I'd say that calls it at just about even. Nearly 60k in either direction.  That's over 8 years, so..  that's what.. 7500 or so a year? That's like 20 a day... some days are much busier, others go by without a peep.

I like to post weird stuff in other journals - comment on what folks are saying or as a nudge to get a conversation started. Folks seem to like to comment on my journal - probably because there's a variety in most of my posts - generally, I talk about my life, observations and links to stuff I think is neat or informative. The funny thing is, some things I figure will get a response will have no comment on 'em, and things that I think are really interesting only to me get a string of responses a mile long.

9304 - Wednesday

Midweek. Time is grinding slowly, but exceedingly fine. Only one month to July 4 and fireworks everywhere!

BHK made some amazingly good quiche last night... fake bacon "fakon!", broccoli and cheddar, and the other was a ricotta, broccoli cheddar - sides were tortellinis stuffed with brie, green beans, and zucchini - Larry came over and added corn on the cob for all, as well as grilled burgers for himself and Chris.

it was a short night - after supper, we pretty much went right to bedski... it was raining, and highly conducive to slumber.

Glad to see mootpoint back! I'm looking forward to seeing him post more frequently.

Bare Food Cupboards More Common in So. Md. - Southern Maryland Headline News

Most surprising and saddening to me was the following -

Brenda DiCarlo of the Southern Maryland Food Bank said she has noticed people making between $30,000 and $50,000 a year having to rely on grocery assistance from their local food pantries. Her statistics show the number of families seeking assistance has topped 10,000 this year, and that is only for the pantries she supplies.

“There’s been a huge increase…our pantries have had a 40 percent increase in new families needing food, and a 50 percent increase for returning families…there just isn’t enough money to put gas in the car and keep the lights on…a lot of people now just can’t make ends meet.”

DiCarlo’s first recommendation to people is that they call the Department of Social Services. Those who do not qualify for food stamps can still get a complete listing of pantries and programs in their area.

9285 - Monday - Happy 8th, dear journal!

Forgot to mention yesterday - fresh kittens in the neighborhood. I think Tuxedo-kitty is the father, and one of the "cimnim" kitties is the mama.

No matter how stony-hearted I can get... baby kittens melt it pretty quickly. (Kittens are good for discipline and mind control, as anyone who's watched Hyperdrive can tell you.)

See also, Obama with a Kitty as running mate. (Personally, I'd like to see Kcarab Amabo, AKA The Evil Mirror Universe Barack Obama join in the festivities. )

My livejournal account is 8 years old today.

I didn't really get to posting daily until 8/2000, but 9284 posts in 8 years is pretty surprising to me. Something like 3 posts a day, give or take.

Some had a lot more content than others, of course.

In 8 years... a lot has happened. If you'd have told me then that I would still be doing this now, I'd probably have doubted it. The LJ community as a whole has changed hands a few times. The service has been a great boon to me.

I met my wonderful wife on livejournal.... and more than a couple of other new and delightful people from around the world in person as a result, too.

I reconnected with friends that I thought were long lost - both from gaming groups and high school.

I've pretty thoroughly documented my 30s here. Walkabouts, musings, dating, work - there's not much about me that you can't find here... some things are privatized or friends-only security, but the vast majority is open to the world. I sometimes wonder if that's a good idea, but it's worked well for me so far.

I tend to keep my really rough rants or personal lists (shopping for presents and reminders, mostly) to myself. I also used to archive chats here, before google talk; which automatically does it now. I'm guessing there weren't many - maybe 20 or 30, tops.

I'm not really online much for chatties these days, but here and there you might catch me, dear journal. (Gmail checks, generally) my profile page has a list of assorted locations to look me up.

Adam's in Haiti, doing more missionary work - he sounds all right, there were a lot of concerns for his safety. Funny that nobody raised safety issues when he went to Guatemala last year.

a bulk email he sent out -

Hey Everyone!
I am at a Hotel in Petit Goave, Haiti. The lady at the front desk let me use the Internet, so I have to be really quick.
First of all, we have been very safe the entire time. The first guest house we stayed in was in Port-au-Prince and run by Americans who have live there for 12 years. They laughed at me when I asked if there was anything to worry about, and they said that they had teams down here the entire time the riots were happening a month ago. They said that instead of returning from their work sites at 4:30, they just came back an hour later, because by 5 or so the rioters would get tired and all go home, haha. The house has an average of 13 people staying there every night of the year, it was really cool.
Now we are at a hotel in Petit Goave. It is way too nice for us! It is more like a resort, but I guess it was the safest place they could find, and that's what matters most.
Yesterday we helped out a a track event for children which was meant to bring many schools together to inform them about HIV/AIDS. Today we went to a very poor community in the mountains to inform about the same thing, just didn't have a track meet. We haven't actually done any blood work or anything like that yet, so it's been really safe. For the rest of the week we are going to be doing more events with children and some community clean-ups, etc.
I gotta run. I don't know if I'll be able to email again, but just know that the State Department is full of it, haha. Especially with the precautions we are taking, we are very safe. If I don't get to email again then I'll talk to you or see you in 7 days.
Love,
Adam
PS: Send this to anyone who might be interested in hearing my status/update, and thanks for your continued prayers. See you all soon!

glad to hear he's aok! I suspected as much.

Gentle evening last night - watched 27 dresses with BHK and Chris over supper - gigantic bean salad, with left over zucchini and Thai curry soup. Delicious.

The movie wasn't bad as far as chick flicks go... The most curious thing to me was that there were no minorities, elderly or babies in the film of note. With the exception of the Girl's dad, everyone was a white 20-something...and I think of New York being pretty diverse.

9254 - Friday -

18 month anniversary today. After work, BHK and I headed out to Silver Spring to meet up with Sirenity, Leagle_beagle555 and Chrishaas. Friendly folks and meeting was long overdue.

I forgot my camera, so I'm depending on Sirenity for picture documentation later on. We had a nice time and conversation over supper - more to follow as I think of it.

New back drugs are - Lyrica, Cyclobenzaprine and Nabumetone. I want to do a bit more research on 'em before I take them. Nabumetone in particular had a lot of nasty, scary warnings in the information text.

I am glad that they're not habit-forming, and have a lot of pretty decent write-ups so far.

Dell will be offering Windows XP pre-installed on their computers past the June 30 cut-off date. Computers purchased with Vista Business or Vista Ultimate past June 30 will come with a copy of XP Pro. Dell plans to simply install that copy upon request to save users a step. Perhaps this will help Microsoft officials make up their minds about another extension.

According to F-Secure, over 500,000 webservers across the world, including some from the United Nations and UK government, have been victims of a SQL injection. The attack uses an SQL injection to reroute clients to a malicious javascript at nmidahena.com, aspder.com or nihaorr1.com, which use another set of exploits to install a Trojan on the client's computer. As per usual, Firefox users with NoScript should be safe from the client exploit, but server admins should be alert for the server-side injection. Brian Krebs has a decent writeup on his Washington Post Security Blog, Dynamoo has a list of some of the high-profile sites that has been hacked, and for fun you can watch some of the IIS admins run around in circles at one of the many IIS forums on the 'net.

I need to remember that free comic book day is coming May 3... next weekend! Will I forget? Probably. But it's exciting to not write it down anywhere else and then rediscover. I wonder what loot Aardvark will have for us? I hope issues of Gumby and Hellboy (and maybe an Iron Man heroclix figure?) will be left.

I should scope out umbrella academy - probably my fave freebie book from last time - I could go for a trade paperback, if available.

Just so you know - I have never, ever pistol-whipped anyone, dear journal. Please don't make me change that situation.

KINSHASA (Reuters) - Police in Congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men's penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft.

Reports of so-called penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa, where belief in traditional religions and witchcraft remains widespread, and where ritual killings to obtain blood or body parts still occur. Read more... )

9253 -Thurs

Lovely day today.

Lots of gypsy moth and / or tent caterpillar nests in the crooks of trees around here. Seeing birds and moths in flight through the early morning fog is something magical, if you'll excuse the lack of a less cliched expression, dear journal. I really dislike defoliation, but watching moths and butterflies flit around makes me happy. The first date I had with BHK, we saw a luna moth in the parking lot of Mama Lucias, and we were both captivated by it. Now of course, it's doing advertising for a sleep aid.

Believe it or not, I'm a very quiet cricket, too.

Tomorrow will be my 18 month (I just spelled it moth... on the brain) wedding anniversary. Good stuff! only 33 more of those until our 50 year mark!

Goal at the doc today was muscle relaxers or a cortisone shot, maybe an appointment with a physical therapist? I don't want to take narcotics for this, or only in an emergency.

Results were pretty positive - found a potentially good resource for physical therapy, and a few non-dopey pain fixers. I'm going to do more research on the different drugs before taking them this weekend.

After the doc, we went to Ledo's - BHK got a cookin' break. Yummy, but not as good as her stuff.

A month after the beta dropped, Linux distro Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron is officially out. Besides running GNOME 2.22 and Firefox 3 Beta 5, a big new feature is Wubi support, which'll let Ubuntu live on the same partition as Windows and makes it easy to uninstall if you want to retreat back into Microsoft's bosom. If you're Li-curious, now's a good time to try. The site's getting hammered so torrent might be your best bet.

Is it vain wonder if people I haven't seen in years ever think of me? Not even friends or people I knew really well... but random classmates, ex-coworkers, etc. I sometimes contemplate my effects on people long after I've gone. There are any number of folks who don't know me from Adam that have caused changes in the way I think or react to things.

More random spam journals adding me - I wonder what is causing it? Is it the time of year? Same thing happened a year ago. ban_set is still my best friend when it comes to dealing with them - far more expedient than dealing with lj-abuse team. I suspect it's a side-effect of the number of google hits the journal gets... ad folks trying to get some free hits.

Assorted doodles done recently on the palm, usually on the bus, or at the stop in the morning.

From the night we missed the scarlet pimpernel. I still think of the Daffy duck version whenever I hear the title.
I had a lot on my mind that day... supposed to represent swirling colors that remain discrete, but it looks pretty static.
A scribble made while waiting for the bus. Not jacket weather anymore, but not sweating in shirtsleeves yet, either.
From yesterday. The color doesn't do justice to her hair's brighness, nor does the balloon properly exhibit her boomingly loud voice.

Ah, Almost Friday.

Yesterday, we went to DC to check out the cherry blossom festival - post rain they were at about 70% bloom, still lovely - it was overcast, made for mediocre photography, but I did get to visit the Jefferson monument, and the FDR memorial (which is probably my new favorite .... giant, tells the story well, and beautiful. I'd never been to it before - didn't really know much about it.)

Best of the pictures to follow in a later post - but here's a link to what was taken yesterday.

A ton of spam journals have added me recently... had to go through the console and ban_set them.

Yummy Quiche & Salad for supper last night... more for lunch today! Took it Easy last night. some forgettable TV and read more of Mignola's Baltimore, or The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire. Slow at first but it's rolling along reasonably well now.

Rhyss made a pretty nifty observation in his journal -

The New York Times did a story about relationships torpedoed by a incompatibility in taste in books.

"We’ve all been there. Or some of us have. Anyone who cares about books has at some point confronted the Pushkin problem: when a missed — or misguided — literary reference makes it chillingly clear that a romance is going nowhere fast."

Which got me thinking - what books do I have that would be most likely to send a prospective date running for the door, never to be seen again?

Actually, most of my GFs have been of a similar mindset where reading is concerned... but I have always liked nerd / geek / Rockabetty types.

Here are 10 of my "scare off potential 'normal girl' dates" books currently on the shelf - I'll leave it to BHK to do her own books, if she desires.

[edit -later] I tried, and failed. I have very little truly objectionable material - I couldn't get to 10. Instead, here's a grouping of what you might find weird or not on the shelves.

  1. Encyclopedia of Occultism - I'm sure someone will get the wrong message there! (I'm pretty much a non-believer in that sort of stuff, but I love folklore / mythology.. many tomes of that type of thing)
  2. Rats - a History (actually, BHK and I both had a copy on the shelf, until we gave one to David!) Lots of history.
  3. A bunch of gaming books. (Warhammer rules just recently picked up)
  4. A bunch of Science Fiction (Nerd!)
  5. Books about Primate Psychology - Monkey Politics
  6. A Bunch of 40s detective novels.
  7. Stacks of books that have yet been unread. BHK and I hit the book sales pretty hard, and our queue is long... and we lengthen it by using the libray, too!
  8. Books in varying states of repair, from ragged, well-loved ones, to previously mentioned unopened tomes.
  9. Books about weird people-places-things.
  10. blank page book for coloring, with pencils of many shades.

  • live_journalia - for nationstates players, long dead, yet 10 members cling to it

I'm mostly proud of the hut, as it has provided a lot of good information for women's health... it was the first of its kind on livejournal, thought there are many more good resources in place now. I've only had to deal with a few instances of spamming, trolling or the like on any of them.

Have you ever wondered how the Enterprise would fare against a Star Destroyer, or how a Halo sizes up to a the Moon? Have you ever tried to guess just how big a Dyson Sphere would have to be to encompass the Earth's orbit around the sun? Jeff Russell has, and that's why he built Starship Dimensions, a website devoted to cataloging and contrasting the minutiae of Science Fiction's massives. In it you will find a library of vehicles spanning decades of Science Fiction movies and series, all meticulously drawn in proportion to each other. "Scale has always fascinated me," says Russell. "It is an important, yet often misunderstood or neglected way in which everything in our universe relates. And of course I've always really wanted my own Death Star, so naturally I wanted to know how big it really was, or how many Star Destroyers I could fit in it."

Similar, is the skyscraper page. (I'm glad that I could find Emerson tower info. The proper name for the Bromo-Seltzer Clock.)

9202 - friday

End of the week, at last, at last. Back is feeling a bit better... must've slept on it right on Thursday night, for a change! Maybe, if all goes well, we can hit the Carl Barks exhibit in Baltimore. We have midday plans for Saturday (see below), and who knows what Easter Sunday will bring - but if not this weekend, perhaps sometime before the end of the month... I don't have a strong need to visit - the review is not the most complimentary (mainly due to the fact that most of his early stuff that I like is long gone, trashed back in the day)... but if we're in the neighborhood visiting the Art Museum, or the Aquarium, why not? (more on Carl Barks )

I don't think the the lj content strike is going to make a difference, and I'm more interested in seeing how much of my reading list changes, if at all this weekend. If lj poops out, there are plenty of other sites that offer similar functionality... and my RSS reader will allow me to collect feeds from whoever wants me to read 'em.

Regarding teamorange - the first colorwar2008 scrimmages will begin in a few days. I'm interested to see what sort of project Ze has in mind. So far, I've found teams blue, verygreen, puce, chartreuse, purple, gold, plaid, red, pink, white, clear and brown in addition to orange. If any other players are reading this, let me know, so I can follow you on twitter! #FF6600, baby! [update: See also - colorwars - there's a team octarine!]

It seems ol' Ze has quite a following - but I knew that. I just hope he uses his mighty net-powers for good, rather than evil.

Lunch tomorrow with Adam and his twin bro Eric. It's always interesting to see them together, because they were raised in different households. Adam, at his mom's (and more to the point, mostly at Larry & Chris's), Eric at his pop's. Adam seems to be the more together kid, athletic, better in school, less shifty. Eric is the party guy, partying hard, skipping class and spending more time looking to mate than to study; I.e. typical 18-year-old male.

Nature vs Nurture, live and in front. Both are basically good guys, and similar as brothers can be - but hardly duplicates.

I sneakily added a video to the lunchtime rendezvous entry about a week or so back. Filmed with the palm-cam, the image is warmed, grainy, and silly, not to mention in quicktime format. For some reason, google video doesn't transfer sound properly form the palm video during the conversion, so I'm hosting it in my old lj archive location on my website. Speaking of which, I have a palm doodle there that reflects that there's still a lot of rain happening at the ol' bus stop, but I don't mind.

windy, too, though I don't have that much length anymore, hair-wise.

Writer's Block: A Favorite Poem

some days are easier than others.

today was not one of them.

[Error: unknown template qotd]

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole;
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced, nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance,
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade;
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll:
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
