9217 - sunday

BHK sick ... Nothing serious, but she's got a tummy bug. Party food and pizza was rough on her innards I think. After Alice's party yesterday, we swung by Games Workshop - picked up a present for someone else and a warhammer (fantasy) rulebook for me. BHK looks interested in painting minis... maybe we'll build an army or two, to add to the games closet?

I'm eyeing lizard men and ogres,(primarily for yhetees ) or my old standby of dwarfs vs orcs & goblins. (might get the battle for skull pass starter kit, comes with the latter)

Saturday, it was about 50... Friday, it was 76F outside.. the day before it was in the 40s. see-saw, much, mama nature?

I like David Horvitz's plan for doing things for mostly just the cost of expenses. The apologies and mailbox bit, especially.

Give your family all a big hug from me!

Yeah, I agree that "detox" is basically a bunch of hooey and can be dangerous too. A good friend of our family is big on colon cleansing and he's nearly killed himself with those herbs a couple of times. I never met a guy more obsessed with his own poop. He used to measure it. And take pictures of it. Egad.

But I've also got a bone to pick with that blogger because I'm one of the "woowoo cranks" who has done a fair bit of reading about vaccine additives and their effect on developing immune systems and I've elected to put my kid on an alternative vaccination schedule as a result of my research. While I definitely not a proponent of "chelation," I do think there is scientific evidence to support a link between excessive mercury and aluminum exposure in infants and a number of serious neurological conditions that have been on the increase in the last twenty years (since the CDC added more than a dozen new injections to their recommended vax schedule). I'll admit that the jury is still out on a lot of this stuff right now and its become a bit of a "cause celebre" at the moment. (For the record, I started researching this topic long before it was on "Oprah"...) But I don't have the luxury of just waiting to see how it all shakes out. I have a baby and I need to make informed decisions about his health right now In our case, we're going to eliminate of few of the more questionable vaccines (rotavirus, varicella, flu), delay a few (Hep A & B), breakup a few of the combo vaccines (MMR), and space the others out over a longer period of time so Oscar has a chance to process one vax before he gets exposed to another.

Ooof, sorry....don't mean to get up on a soapbox here. I should have commented in that guy's blog instead, but I don't feel like arguing with him (and you know this would probably start a stupid flame war over there...). I just get a bit annoyed when otherwise intelligent and rational people automatically assume that the medical establishment is correct about everything. Sometimes, you gotta question a higher authority. And when you're deciding between possibly scrambling your baby's brain forever or them just getting freakin' chicken pox, the choice seems pretty obvious. If that makes me a ignorant quack, so be it.

[identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh.. yeah, I don't agree with everything that guy says, but I'm on the detox is quackery side of things.

Vaccination is a tricky business. I'm glad you're doing some of the more nasty ones, in case of terrible issues, but yeah... pox isn't something to swaet too much over, as far as the alternative goes.

[identity profile] missv.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of the stuff we vax for isn't even that dangerous. The shot that is causing the biggest uproar right now...the MMR combo...vaccinates against three diseases that are rarely, if ever, fatal. In fact, rubella symptoms are so mild that your kid can have it and you don't even realize it. But it can cause birth defects if a pregnant woman catches the disease, so we routinely vaccinate everyone to keep it under control for the sake of the unborn. Unfortunately, the MMR vaccine has been linked to problems for lots of kids and they think its might be the cause of the sudden spike in autism rates in the US. The solution is pretty simple: instead of a combo shot, you give the three vaccines separately over the course of a few months and that reduces the risks immensely. But its less convenient for doctors and the drug companies push the combo shot to the point where its difficult to even get the individual doses without a bunch of rigamarole. So families panic and don't vaccinate at all and that's pretty scary too.

[identity profile] blackhellkat.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing I hate is how schools require the shots! Even going to grad school I was required to prove I had immunity to chicken pox and mmr----I thought it was dumb! Well maybe not the chicken pox but the mmr definitely!

Actually, you can file an exemption in most states. Some are more liberal than others about it, but here in WI, they can't deny a kid admittance to a public school if you file either a religious or "philosophical" exemption. Private institutions can refuse kids though. But since we aren't putting Oz in daycare and we don't belong to a health club or a church, we don't have to worry about that.

The real trick for us is going to be finding another kid with chicken pox who can give them to Oscar. That's one vaccine I reeeeally want to avoid because it didn't have much long-term testing before it was introduced to the public. But IRL, it has proven to be pretty ineffective so far. It seems to provide only limited immunity and they're finding that the kids who got vax'ed 10 years ago are just getting the disease when they're older and its a more serious condition. I can see the benefit of vax'ing for something like polio. But when was the last time you heard about someone who died or was crippled by chicken pox?? Its a total racket.

We got a couple boxes of Ogre Bulls and Lizardmen in Gamers. Might be abl to do you an almost 40% off deal if you interested.

[identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
OOooOoO.... that is very, very tempting! :D

[identity profile] eryx-uk.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No one buys WFB at Gamers, so we have a handful of box sets that are just gathering dust. I had a look tonight and we have two boxes of Ogre Bulls and two boxes of Lizardmen Saurus. I could probably do them a little above cost (as mentioned previously).

[identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com 2008-04-01 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder why Warhammer Fantasy doesn't do so well there? too much of an investment?

How much would it cost for us to get 'em?

[identity profile] eryx-uk.livejournal.com 2008-04-01 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't sell because we're pretty much all 40K players. I know that I find WFB to be far too complex for my gaming tastes, but 40K is easier and I love the setting.

I'll check this evening (got a zombie RPG tonight at the shop) and let you know.
