Gobbled up the rest of Pride & Prejudice yesterday. Well, Elizabeth certainly wins out. Darcy, (you dink) bad first impressions, but nice recovery. Netherfield is a *terrible* name for an estate.

Nice perspective on place in society. I wonder what the world will look like in another hundred or so years? What'll be acceptable? Which stigmas will be left? Maybe I'm a super-optimist, but I can see a time (granted, likely more than a few generations down the line) where folks will not, for the most part, be judged based on genetic factors like gender or skin color. I wonder who or what the scapegoat will be; who'll get pushed down so others can raise themselves up.

I think that monkey politics are an integral part of how humans behave. Some leader and clique-type activities will happen, territory and a need to push folks around. Who's next on the list? Or, more likely, who'll stay on the list, 200 years from now? Will it still be folks who are more easily singled out by shape or manner? People with more aggression or drive winning out over folks that can be more readily stomped on?

Solar-Powered Sun Bricks - These could have more than just garden walk applications.

Newton in stalker-mode
Photo taken in the dark... Newt halfway between sphinx mode and stalking a paper wad I haphazardly kicked.
Note the pointy butt, though his tail is down.

rolling a joint
on the bus Friday morning - two teenagers, maybe 14 years old or so.
The one pictured had a little yin-yang grinder for buds, and rolled joints to order.
pretty bold on a packed bus at 7:30 AM.

desk
playing with a random macro shot. my desk at work.

A Firkin is an old English unit of volume. The name is derived from the Middle Dutch word vierdekijn, which means fourth, i.e. a fourth of a full-size barrel.

solar powered bricks, solar powered fountain, and the self-powered led light thing are all on my wish list now!

i can't believe that kid was rolling joints on the bus! people are so insane.

[identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
the bricks are *really* pretty, and who doesn't mind "free" lighting and such?

The funny thing about the bus is that there are at least 3 video cameras recording at all times.

Then Elizabeth told Darcy to kiss her Netherfield.

Your desk is much cleaner than mine. I see no dust bunnies or errant pens or *legal* binder clips. I'm very disturbed by this---very disturbed indeed. :D

Shouldn't that be the "now no-so-secret lever"? :D

you're welcome.

i said to my partner the other day "don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when i'm angry."
and HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT! (what the f?)

what is the world coming to? perhaps that is the answer to what will the would be like 200 years from now. a world of references with no referent.

if you want to read a phrenology crazy book- check out dracula. it seems to be written at the peak of judging people from their looks and class. but you probably already read it.

Heehee, Newtie and his pointy butt.

I hope the next scapegoats are mean people who are unkind to kitties.

[identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey there! Long time no see!

Newtie's butt only goes pointy when he elevates it pre-launch. :)

Bah on kitty dislikers!

Thank you! :D

Newton is a big boy, but he doesn't often look that round or pointy.

[identity profile] weezeroni.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that pose of Newtie's...And your desk really does look freakishly, serial killer neat. I'm with BHK on this one :)

[identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheezit, they're on to me!

How to take over the world with an orange cat in 3 easy steps.

[identity profile] blackhellkat.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you have to have a neat desk in order to write a "Manifesto".

Well, I'm out of the "Manifesto" biz. Scotto, though...He DID mention a suspicious paper wad. Hmmmm....

"who'll get pushed down so others can raise themselves up"

Like you - I think that race issues will be lessened. But I fear that
beauty, is becoming more of a problem. It's always been somewhat an issue, but it seems it's becoming an obsession. Studies have been done that show non-beautiful/handsome people earn less and are passed over for employment more often. Other studies have shown they lose out on other things in life as well.

I'm tired of the constant barage of Barbie & Ken's that the media world has been obsessed with this last decade. I've also noticed how often people (both on LJ or in person) talk about, or are NOT interested in someone if they are not a hottie. It really bums me out. :P

[identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com 2006-08-22 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Beauty is a tricky thing. It's amazing what some folks will put up with in order to become or have someone more beautiful than not.

[identity profile] juliabee.livejournal.com 2006-08-22 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you think? Have you noticed an a change....more of an obsession with beauty, this last decade, or no?

[identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com 2006-08-22 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
hard to say.... the 80s had a real "look at me" vibe too... perhaps we've always been vain?
