Man severs own penis, throws it at officers

Before cops threw the book at him, Jakub Fik threw something unusual at them -- his penis.

Fik, 33, cut off his own penis during a Northwest Side rampage Wednesday morning. When confronted by police, Fik hurled several knives and his severed organ at the officers, police said. Officers stunned him with a Taser and took him into custody.

"We took him out without any serious injury, with the exception of his own," said Chicago Police Sgt. Edward Dolan of the 16th District.

Doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital reattached Fik's penis Wednesday, sources said. He was listed in good condition Thursday, according to hospital spokesman Andrew Buchanan, who declined to comment further.

Smashing car windows

Fik, who lives in the 5400 block of W. Berenice, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminal damage to property, said Officer Laura Kubiak. He told paramedics he was distraught over problems with his girlfriend in Poland, Dolan said.

Police arrived on Fik's block at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday after receiving reports he was smashing car windows, Dolan said. Fik then broke into a house down the block. A group of six or seven officers assembled in front of the house, Dolan said.

The occupants were not home, he added.

Fik was bleeding when the officers arrived and may have already cut off his organ, Dolan said.

"At that point, this guy came running out, naked, with a handful of knives . . . and started throwing knives at the police officers that were 10, 20, 30 feet away," Dolan said.

Fik threw his penis during the confrontation, too, Dolan said. He then went back into the house and re-emerged with "another handful of knives," Dolan said.

Dolan sneaked to the side of the bungalow's front steps and stunned Fik with the Taser. Fik fought back when officers went to restrain him, Dolan said.

"About 10 feet from the front porch, right on the sidewalk, was his penis," Dolan said.

Dr. Greg Bales, associate professor of urology at the University of Chicago, said severed penises are uncommon but surgery usually works.

"As long as the penis is placed on ice and reattached within a few hours, the success is usually pretty good," Bales said.

BEIJING (Reuters) - A city in China, a country that's home to the world's most enthusiastic smokers, is crushing fake cigarettes to make medicine, Xinhua news agency said on Sunday.

The north-western city of Xian is using the counterfeit cigarettes to extract solanesol, a compound found in tobacco which is used to treat cardiovascular disease, it said.

"We used to incinerate the fake cigarettes, which is wasteful and causes air pollution," Xinhua quoted Zhou Yaqing, vice director of the provincial tobacco monopoly, as saying.

A kilo of solanesol is worth about $200, and 30 tons of tobacco leaf can produce up to 120 kilos, Xinhua added.

China is the world's largest cigarette producer, with a growing market of about 320 million. Chinese cigarettes are also among the cheapest in the world -- a packet can cost as little as 8 U.S. cents -- and smoking kills 1.2 million people a year in China, according to the World Health Organization.

Fake cigarettes, made of poor quality tobacco and often topped up with wood chips, are commonly sold on Chinese streets.

I miss the good old GM Doom Patrol it’s one of those comic runs I still dig out from time to time to re-read.

that whole team is a big fave of mine too, especially under GM's run.

That was one of the first things I noticed about Bethany... she's got a long-version of Crazy Jane's Hair.

Also, see next entry for a fun surprise!

Well Crazy Jane hair sounds like a big plus to me.
I haven’t read much DP outside of GM's run. The stuff that’s come after, including what I've seen of the current Byrne reboot is lackluster.
Never read any of the original stories though I do like that old look. Now that DC is doing an the Essentials-like “Showcase” maybe someday there will be an original Doom Patrol one, heck they did one for Jonah Hex.

The old stories were fun, but more silver-age whitebread next to zetsy morrison stuff.

There was one where Cliff literally took himself apart piece by piece to survive some deathdraps, a leg here, and arm there, until he was just a quadropelegic torso with a head (who then dropped his 400+lb bulk onto the enemy from above after climbing a tree with just his steam-shovel jaw.)

It was nice to see ther old rita/larry/cliff/mento DP in an episode of teen titans.

Heh, that's some pretty cool silver-age goodness. Morrison said that the book used to scare him as a child which is why he went with that surreal horror vibe than ran through many of the stories.

That was a neat ep. Not familiar with Mento other than I know we went evil, damn psions always do.

Yeah, he was pretty jerky in the episode, too.
