6451 spam poll

Wow, got a load of comment-spam from 216.79.8.162 (zyrtec.ihc-services.com hosted via bellsouth) overnight... this is why I screen anonymous posts. (I haven't had to screen all "non-friends" yet.) Subject line was "hi", body was a collection of about 35 hyperlinks for assorted drugs. This is the downside of being so heavily indexed.

They were reported to abuse@bellsouth.net with IP address, time/date, message header, and attack logs, but I don't expect much to happen.

[Poll #245145]

I get about 10-15 a day that make it through my filters... my bulk mail folder catches about another 30-50, usually.

My mostly-unused hotmail account (only to register on websites or the like) gets about another 30 a day.Site Meter

the journal, or the spam?

how many comments did you get, or did you bother counting?

I got roughly 8-10 of the comment emails over the last two or three days. They were all comments to old ass entries in my DeadJournal. Each comment was to a different entry.

that's what happened to me, too... entries from like 2001.

What I want to know is, how does that kind of advertising work?

Like, did they expect me to be like "WOW, XANAX!! THANKS ANONYMOUS DEADJOURNAL COMMENTER FOR TELLING ME ABOUT IT 10 TIMES!!!"

I think it's to boost themselves up on search engines.... they probably look for key words (in the case of our journals, something like poop, dooty cramps, or monkeys, I suppose) and then post on those entries, which shoot them up on the search index.

or maybe they think we *really* need viagra.

Yeah, I'm sure you're right, it's just funnier to picture some guy running a drug website getting the idea to send a bot to comment in blogs or whatever, rubbing his hands together going, "I'LL BE RICH! RICH I TELL YOU!!!"

yeah, the only reason I keep a deadjournal these days is as a bookmark to the LJ.
