Random Scotto factoid - I have always possessed an odd fondness for windmills. When I see them in movies, or as cookies, it just makes me happy... especially the old-style 4-sailed sorts, though the weird farm-propeller ones are also keen. Long before I ever read Don Quixote de la Mancha.

I like water-driven mills too, for that matter.

Here's a hidden program in Windows Xp, it is a very useful graphics tool for designing your own fonts, logos and icons.

To start the program go to Run in the Start Menu then type eudcedit and click OK.

It will then open the program, and you just select a hexadecimal code for your first character from the grid to start then click OK and you are now ready to begin designing. Using the set of drawing tools on the left you can do your own design. When you have finished you can save your character, either in a particular font, or all fonts. via

I just downloaded Night of the Living Dead down to my PSP. you can d/l it or watch it directly on archive.org or google video. It's one of my all-time fave scary movies.

Happiness is Roddy MacDowell with silly string on most recent Columbo. I honestly don't know if I prefer him in protagonist or antagonist roles. It did really put the focus on the dangers of smoking and "modern answering machines", if nothing else. It seems that Columbo went from drinking bourbon on the job in '68 to passing on booze entirely in '72. I wonder if the Mrs. turned him around?

[Poll #748518]
Why? (answer in comments, my answer is below)

Poll was brought on by hearing that the knight on a chessboard has to move in an "L" shape because back then, the horse had to be turned left or right for the knight to get close enough to hit someone with a sword or mace.

Sometimes I think that I shuffle that way, behaviorally (is that a word?). I move off to the side, and then a bit forward. (or vice versa) It seems to progress effectively, I have to shift a bit, laterally.

It's also worth noting that I am *horrid* at chess... I still haven't grasped the best strategies of the game. I do very well at simpler ones, like Go, Othello (Reversi), Pente, Checkers, and the likeGeotarget

I stayed home from work yesterday... but Dan came by to visit after 5pm - we checked out Lord of the Rings Online.. signed up for the Beta. Helped Danny figure out what sort of machine he'd need to play it, graphics-wise and such. No movie or Japanese foodies.

After sniffing out gaming tech online, we played pirates (see icon) - each of us won a game, and both were very close. I had superior firepower, he had speed on his side. Ramming and boarding were actually to my benefit for the first time ever playing the game.

I gave him a Rubyred Labs T-shirt as a victory gift from my valleyschwag pack. (I kept the stickers and perplexCity cards) Newt got along with Danny quite well, save for when Dan drew first blood in the pirates game... he exclaimed "BLAM!" quite loudly, and Newt leapt up on the table and yelled at him, and took a swabby-paw swat at his face. I swear, Newt's more of a watchdog than a scaredy-cat.

After playing, we decided to stretch our legs, and yawns came in a rapid collection of waves... hard to guess what caused it. I think I yawned about 25 times in rapid succession... to the point where I got a little light-headed. Danny followed suit shortly afterward, though he only yawned about four or five times.

[Poll #743503]
We went upstairs to the snack bar, but Target had no coffee, so we hit *$ on the way back. He bought me a pirate booster, so now I have a corsair and an American Ship... plus a Corsair guy that can create temporary fog banks with smoke bombs-- not a bad addition to my current fleet of British, Spanish and pirate folks.

Dan's shirt had a mermaid on it, but is no relation to the Feegee Mermaid. Yucka! - His shirt was more of one of these.(far more cute than feegee)

Going to grab a bite and visit with Tina today after work... should be a jim-dandy time. Perhaps we'll swing by Dicey Rileys, too. I suspect Eddie Izzard is out, but I'm sure we can keep a steady stream of enjoyable banter going. I'm not used to having things happening outside of the HQ on "school nights". It's a refreshing change of venue.

When your world is full of strange arrangements
And gravity won't pull you through
You know you're missing out on something
Well that something depends on you

All I'm saying, it takes a lot to love you
All I'm doing, you know its true
All I mean now, theres one thing
Yes one thing that turns this gray sky to blue

Thats the look, thats the look
The look of love

When your girl has left you out on the pavement (goodbye)
Then your dreams fall apart at the seams
Your reason for livings your reason for leaving
Don't ask me what it means

Who's got the look? I don't know the answer to that question
Where's the look? if I knew I would tell you
What's the look? look for your information
Yes there's one thing, the one thing that still holds true

(whats that? )

Thats the look, thats the look
The look of love

If you judge a book by the cover,
Then you'd judge the look by the lover
I hope you'll soon recover,
Me I go from one extreme to another

And though my friends just might ask me
They say Martin maybe one day you'll find true love
I say maybe, there must be a solution
To the one thing, the one thing, we can't find

Thats the look, thats the look
Sisters and brothers
Should help each other
Oh, oh, oh

Heavens above
Thats the look, thats the look, hip hip hooray, ay
Thats the look, thats the look, yippee ai yippee aiay
Thats the look, thats the look
Be lucky in love

The Monkey Chow diaries

Imagine going to the grocery store only once every 6 months. Imagine paying less than a dollar per meal. Imagine never washing dishes, chopping vegetables or setting the table ever again. It sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

But can a human subsist on a constant diet of pelletized, nutritionally complete food like puppies and monkeys do? For the good of human kind,I'm about to find out. On June 3, 2006, I began my week of eating nothing but monkey chow: "a complete and balanced diet for the nutrition of primates, including the great apes."

Hmm.. note the chow info page mentions *NON HUMAN PRIMATES*

Ingredients
Ground corn, Soybean meal, Cracked wheat, Sucrose,Wheat germ meal, Animal fat (preserved with BHA, propyl gallate and citric acid), Dried whole egg, Dicalcium phosphate, Calcium carbonate, Iodized salt,Vegetable oil, Choline chloride, Stabilized ascorbic acid (source of Vitamin C), Ethoxyquin (a preservative), Ferrous sulfate, Zinc oxide, Copper chloride, Manganous oxide, Cobalt carbonate, Calcium iodate, Sodium selenite,Vitamin A supplement,Vitamin D3 supplement,Vitamin E supplement, Thiamine (Vitamin B1), Niacin, Calcium pantothenate, Pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Folic acid, Biotin,Vitamin B12 supplement.

1 lb of chow per 35 lbs of monkey? Man... that's a lot of food!

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Some people like to talk to their plants. Now, students at Singapore Polytechnic say they have created a plant that can communicate with people -- by glowing when it needs water.

The students said on Tuesday that they have genetically modified a plant using a green fluorescent marker gene from jellyfish, so that it "lights up" when it is stressed as a result of dehydration.

The light is hard to detect with the naked eye but can be seen using an optical sensor developed in collaboration with students at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University.

The development of such plants could help farmers to develop more efficient irrigation of cropsGeotarget

... )

I was walkin' to the kitchen for some Golden Grahams
When I accidentally stepped into an alternate dimension
And soon I was abducted by some aliens from space
Who kinda looked like Jamie Farr

They sucked out my internal organs
And they took some polaroids
And said I was a darn good sport
And as a way of saying thank you
They offered to transport me back to
Any point in history that I would care to go

And so I had them send me back to last Thursday night
So I could pay my phone bill on time
Just then the floating disembodied head of
Colonel Sanders started yelling

Everything you know is wrong
Black is white, up is down and short is long
And everything you thought was just so
Important doesn't matter

... )

I realized yesterday that I'm a bit of a sensualist. I love getting input from all of my senses.... I'd quite miss any of them, even scent and taste. I love holding Newton, and feeling him snuggle softly against me. I love catching a slight trace of perfume in the air, especially after a lovely woman walks past. Hearing a child laugh (or any honest, happy laughter) is a wonderful thing. Music. The taste of a grilled cheese sammich on a cool day...or a cold beer after doing yardwork. Breath on back of my neck before having it kissed. A meaty punch into the heavy bag. A drop of sweat running down your spine once you start really getting warmed up. Foot rubs, or the contented sigh you hear when you give a good foot rub to someone else. Rain on the window, with thunder in the background. Hydrogen peroxide bubbling on a cut. Newt barking/trilling. People-watching for shapes, colors and patterns of movement. Urban decay's textures, easy to feel or see. Bugs' multifaceted rainbow eyes. It's all really good stuff.

I heard that quote played in the background while I was reading stuff online. The show was Supernatural but I thought about how keen it would be if these two were just delusional murderers raised by some psycho who got trotted off to jail. I flashed to the "monster hunters" are killing innocent people who were impeding there progress in recovering their father from some institution.... the show, instead of being another "Project Bluebook/X-files/Chill Game" type gig could instead be the insane POV of a pair of guys sublimating homicidal activities with some severe schizo hallucinations. Two guys traveling around leaving a trail of bodies in their wake, blaming invisible "monsters" nobody's ever seen. The FBI is going to take 'em down, and soon.

That said, I actually kind of like Supernatural for what it actually is... yet another bogey-hunter show.
