Hard to believe it's only been 3 years since I was first planning to visit BHK on her birthday. Funny to me how little I can think of life prior to being married to her, and having our crew of four under the roof.

I'm in the office now, taknig a brief break from gig-searching to catch myself up on LJ. Larry is setting up BHK's Best Birthday Present Ever (tm)- a widening of the closet door in our bedroom. For the record, I also proposed to BHK on her birthday, 3 years ago in two weeks. Heck, she'd have wanted closet spasce, even if single.

33333333333333333333333333333333  - Newton's left foot on the number pad says hello. Pye is sleeping on the purple chair to my left, and Netwon has leapt to the couch on my right (newtcam couch) and will be in sleepytown soon.

Here's a breakdown of my music via Media Go -

music layout

According to my SenseMe playlist - the fastest/happiest song is a three way tie -

  • Get a Job - The English Beat

  • The Famous Polka - They Might Be Giants

  • B-52s Cosmic Thing.

Slowest Saddest songs are also a 3-way tie -

  • Matt Lauer can suck it - Michael Gaicchino (Land of the Lost Soundtrack)

  • Running to the Rain - Peter Gabriel

  • Ballero - War

I seem to have mostly happy, mid-speed songs in my library.

I am really interested in a few new looney labs releases - Aquarius 2.0 and Chrononauts: The Gore Years expansion

(Chrononauts 1.4 The Gore Years: Like Aquarius, Chrononauts is also about to get upgraded to the new uniform box. But although it will feature a couple of new cards and a new rulesheet, the new edition of Chrononauts won't be very different from the original. For this reason, and since it's the fourth printing, they've decided to call it version 1.4. However, since a lot has happened since 1999 and Chrononauts is really showing its age, theyere also creating an expansion product that brings the TimeLine into the 21st Century. This packet of 11 cards will feature 5 new Timeline cards (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2008) along with 3 new Patches and 3 new characters who need to change recent events in order to get home. (Of course, it's called the Gore Years because that's what the last 8 years are known as to certain time travelers.). Release date: October 23th.
(Martian Fluxx, too, but not as much as the other two)

Additionally - I'd like to try Apophis sometime as a game. Looks neat, and I have all the pieces already to play!

Went to Aardvark and picked up Mosquito, Humans!!, and Toledo (BHK got comics - Archies 60's and Archies 70s, to go with her 80's book... and NYX.)

Mike kindly threw in a Zombie Fluxx flamethrower expansion pack... and we got a 1,2,5! card, too! I was surprised that we hadn't gotten that promo in the mail from the Looney Labs directly yet.. I'm glad Aardvark is looking out for us! May hang out with Mike & Tara sometime - brought 'em veggies from the garden - pickle salad recipes.

Went to the other Mexico restaurant... *that's* where the chef went! Food was great, and the decor was really sweet, too. It's usually a 7-8 at the other place, it was maybe a 8-9 at this location - a little hard to find from the road... there's another Mexican restaurant coming up on the corner - I fear that might mean trouble for Mexico's Lusby site.

While we were there, we spotted a neat kit-tricycle vehicle - see photos below. click to embiggen.

Bagel, cream cheese, strawberries and pineapple for breakfast - BHK and I slowly worked our way into the morning today.

In-laws came over to do some gardening with BHK- all of it clothed, thanks. Tilled the area, replanted our "volunteers", potatoes, zucchini, cabbage and carrots that came back after last year's planting. I'm really looking forward to seeing what sprouts first!

I was feeling pretty out of it today - rested from 1pm to 5, and off to bed now at 10. I hope I've got my brains back together for tomorrow... I imagine that I will.

Better link for Oshi - I could easily turn it into a 2house game... perhaps call it Martian Push or even code it for online play, if copyright issues didn't exist.

I know I've linked here before but I really want a secret door from these guys. Perhaps in a dresser leading to the crawlspace under the stairs?

Microsoft's not only delaying Windows XP SP3 temporarily, but they're also pulling off Windows Vista SP1—which has already been pushed out to automatic software update—because of potential incompatibilities. Most of us don't need to worry about it since this is just an issue with MS's SQL Servers that affect Microsoft Dynamics Retail management systems. Unless you're running a SQL database at home to track the chore distribution for your family, you can go ahead and manually fetch the update and install it yourself.

[Error: unknown template qotd]Chess. I love games, gaming, and just hanging out over a board with pieces on them... I'm quite good at checkers, pente, risk, miniatures wargaming (like car wars, Angriff!, OGRE or see icon of Danny playing Pirates), assorted icehouse and bar games, but...I simply stink at good ol' classic chess.

I'm generally better at tactics than strategy, but I just can't get an opening set of moves that is acceptable at all. I'm not sure why my skill with that particular game is so low - I suspect a mental block or some working of my brain just doesn't visualize the pieces as well.Geotarget

I really thought a 10 x 12 foot patch wouldn't produce more than a little vanity salad food, but we got a huge crop, especially of peppers, zucchini and cucumbers. My faves were the potatoes and zucchini.. oven baked goodness. BHK turned my lifelong disdain for zucchini into love with her baked veggies in soy flour, and covered in tomato sauce. Yum. Potatoes, I've always had a fondness for.

Chinese food tonight! Yum, and Hooray!

BHK and David went to the thrift store today - brought home some treasures :

She got me a comic book of Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham's first appearance in Marvel Tales (Tails). I actually dug Steve Mellor's art in Goose Rider and the cover even more than the main story.

A black embroidered shirt, and a yellow sweatshirt, both in excellent condition.

Also picked up a pretty broad assortment of books - to be cataloged later.

Also, squid shake.

Cancel that.

After Din-din, we jammed a bit - David on acoustic guitar, Larry on mandolin, and me on the bass. It was fun, but I was full of food and very sleepy, so we cut it pretty short.

The DORmino concept uses an oversized mousepad to soak up the bleedout warmth of a laptop, which embedded electronics convert and transmit to power a wireless mouse. No need to recharge, no dead batteries to pollute the environment.

I need something like that to charge my electronics, based on the warmth I throw off... If I can knock out a baby or a small animal with my temperature, surely the therms could keep my blackberry and digicam juiced up for when I want to use em! How handy would that be for other stuff... a trickle charger in the sofa to keep the remote powered!

I'm just saying.

Looks like the one over-enthusiastic and socially frustrated gamer-type on the icehouse mail list is taking an indefinite leave of absence. I wonder what it'll be like with a better signal-to-noise ratio ? Half the reason I lost interest in pyramid games and participation on the list was due to that guy... maybe the group will get back into friendly design mode rather than debates about wiki formatting and award shows.

Note to self - make a ghost statue.

Pretty keen - Microwave glucose sensor.

For diabetics, the daily routine of pricking their finger to check blood-sugar levels can be an annoying and inconvenient task. But now, a Baylor University researcher has developed an electromagnetic sensor that could provide diabetics a noninvasive alternative to reading their blood glucose levels, and new research shows the sensor works and is effective.

Got my last filling (and the broken filling repaired) last night - On our way home, The ATW man had shed his Spidey Costume, and is now preparing for winter! BHK thought he was killing a turkey, but it turns out that he's just chopping some wood.

Full size is the best way to catch any detail. I rather like the amorphous white blob the light makes... I pretend it's The Man's alien friend, blinky.

Since he didn't numb me very effectively, the anesthetic wore off in under 20 minutes. I was able to enjoy a little stuffed crust pie... and a few quepapas (tasty glorified tater tots) for a lead-in.

I'm about done with Penguin Soccer... it just doesn't stand up to 4-player, and 2-playerwise... I think that the novelty has worn off. Even with a few tweaks, it just needs more work. I'm leaning more towards Binary Homeworlds and Martian Chess as far as icehouse / pyramid games of choice stand out. A few games of Zamboni Wars might bump that into the running, too.

Game design on Pumpkin has come to a standstill... I need to pick up the pen and get back on working the crimps out of a few sticky elements. (Not to Mention Giants and Dwarfs / Brier Patch )

For a lot of Playable games (and more than a few not-so-playable ones) , is still pretty handy. I'm not doing the competition this winter, as I prefer to try and design a good game first, and then worry about what pieces are needed - rather than the other way around. Heck, you can play Martian chess with pennies, nickels and quarters if you wanted to.

Homeworlds seems a lot simpler to play in person than on superdupergames, but it is nice having the hard-coded rules keeping track of what can and can't be done.

BHK made a tasty cake for the gang's thanksgiving at work... orange cake with a cranberry drizzle on top. Yummy... vaguely reminded me of fruit loops.

Newton and Pyewacket are getting to be quite the little chums... perhaps it's due to the colder weather, but they're downright affectionate with one another these days. Newt lovingly headbutted Pye the other night - that's something totally unanticipated.

Kindle looks nifty, but $400 is way too much to spend. I'd probably totally snag it for $200, so maybe next year. I'll be very interested to see where the next version of the technology goes... but it'd be worth it for just free rss reading and wikipedia on the fly, along with whatever books I put on there myself. Throw in some basic PDA functionality, and you've got me, but good. EV-DO could work wonders, too. It reads prc files, so all of my palm ebooks would be just fine, too.

Two interesting links, especially for around thanksgiving - Sent to me by BHK Both give food to the needy by asking for a story from you or just improving your vocabulary.

transcribed and backdated for catch up.

Holy cow - Last night was nuts. Fever dreams of being compressed and spread out over a latticework of red and purple circles - I felt like I was a wad of pizza dough, being roasted and smashed... stretched and smeared while being roasted from inside. Combine suffocation with the feeling of having your joints twisted.

It sucked. Sure, not so bad now that it's passed, but heck... that may've been the worst fever/fever dream I've ever had.

BHK and the boys have been sweethearts and help immensely.

Caught up with out Tivo'ed Kitchen Nightmares - both British and USA versions. Also bagged some Eureka, the new House, too. There are benefits of being so wrecked that you can't read a book or surf the web properly, after all!

I'm still of the opinion that UK's Ramsey is far different than the USA one, but the American gross-out factor is winning me over a bit. Cripes... I don't know why they don't just shut a place down entirely if they get caught serving food that could kill a person.

Turning Points is dangerously similar to my concept for Pumpkin... I may need to revise my maze-y aspect to the game. Worse yet, it may be a better game! Pumpkin may go into a fundamental rethink at this point.

I'm feeling a little sick today - sore joints, sore throat, only on the right-hand side. Getting chills - I rarely get cold. (edit - I'm full blown destroyed. by the time I got home, I could barely walk or function. Severe fever, muscle aches. went to bed on arrival, and burned up all night)

Surprised that nobody commented on the video. I may start putting more in there, depending on what happens where.
Also forgot to post the giant sponge bob in the hay maze. He's about 25 feet tall.

BHK spotted Cranium Triple Triumph at target - I wonder how hard it'd be to convert to icehouse? (Rules here) Maybe a variant, at least, using stacking and mono-colors.

She also brought home lots of fun loot for Halloween. Orange/mango candy corn, Dwight Schrute fridge magnets, and a cool back-lit pirate silhouette!

Hm... Archie McPhee has some nifty zombie toys. I wonder how they'd look on my desk at work? I wonder what other folks would think?

Tigger gaining weight - put her on diet kitty food... I wonder if she thinks that she needs to stock up, in case of being on her own again? She's not as svelte as she used to be. I think Newt and Pye need to visit her, and give her a running around the house partner or two.

I was creaky this weekend, but am feeling better this evening. A severe case of stumble-thumbosis overcame me this weekend, possibly due to poor sleep on Saturday? Well rested today, and things seem much more in control.

We opened up the pickles ! While a trifle mushy, they aren't nearly as over-spicy as I'd feared. I wonder how Miz Pix is doing, speaking of pickles?

Final counts on the 2007 summer Icehouse game competition are in - Pylon , Subdivision and Zamboni Wars won the challenge. I'm surprised that Penguin Soccer didn't do better. All the victors have valid games, but PS just had a fun theme and a reasonable set of rules, especially the 2-player option. I think that it seemed a little skewed, given that they didn't penalise missing entries.

made a volcano board tile for some of the test games I've been working on, while bhk made a franken-mug - I goofed, and did black lines between the squares... Overslept - quick post while BHK gets ready. I feel bad - I wasn't ready when my ride came to get me to the train.

Yummy, simple meals lately. Stir-fry broccoli w/tofu and carrot over brown rice day before yesterday and garden burgers with fried potatoes last night. Good stick to your ribs type stuff.

Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares - USA is a bit different than the UK version. I anticipate a physical fight in one of these, given our continent's "Wild West" proclivities. You just can't bawl some people out like he does.

Good synopsis here.

Game ideas developing in my head - Giants and Dwarfs, Pumpkin, and Rabbit, Fox, Bear (Brier Patch) - all are in the most germ-like beginnings.

Giants and Dwarfs is an "ants vs elephant" or Ogre "Big tank(s) vs many infantry" type theme.

Pumpkin is a multi-player maze game through a pumpkin patch. Possibly Team oriented, or every man for himself. (or both.) I like the idea of using eeore's chessboard wedges for each player. Complexity seems to go up per increment/player.

RFB is a variation on King's Table. (Hunter vs hunted) - Added theme of a Brier patch, and Uncle Remus.

Fun Quiz... I'm especially partial to the program that assembles the blueprint parts together!

We do have a moat, actually - and our pantry is similar.

Discussions last night include a few oddball words and definitions.

Macerated (person meant lacerated, I think)
bob's your uncle (Person used "your aunt's your uncle")
how's your father (Person outright disbelieved the slang usage, and I was surprised to find out it was more than just a "rub")

BHK likes Siouxie and the Banshees, and mocks Devo. I like 'em both, but I reverse the charges just to be contrary.

We opted out of Yo-yo girl cop... didn't hold us for 30 min, not worth continuing. Instead, we went with Ramsey's Kitchen nightmares.

Forgot to mention yesterday that La Fiesta is dropping in our estimation (save for the yummy mole') and Mexico restaurant is becoming a clear winner.

Maggie Moo's Caramel ice cream mixes well with the chocolate fudge.

I eat chips and salsa poorly with a numbed upper lip.

Capitol City Carnival... Maybe I'll see if BHK and I can swing by. I do like me some Fishbone.

on-demand, social manufacturing; design, share, and buy laser-cut products from a variety of materials

Lots of gameboard ideas going on, especially volcano. I'm thinking about variants of color, size and shape could be a lot of fun. A custom volcano board with a green top and frosted clear bottom would be great fun for under-lighting, and perfect for me.. especially if I can build the whole thing to spec.

Also thinking about custom etching designs on the surface... there's a lot of potential here.

Vector drawing is key - I should ask Sammy how he's progressing in that arena. Heck, I should just say hi to him, anyhow! Maybe Cyn would have an interest in this, too. She's got some keen illustration skills. (Though my crude palm doodles might look sort of nifty etched on stuff, too.)
Speaking of laser cut stuff, I love this guy's custom skateboards.

Relaxing nighttime plans for BHK and me the coming week or so ahead:

Yo-yo Girl Cop, The Number 23, and a few rousing games of Penguin Soccer, Martian Chess and Zamboni Wars over popcorn should set us right. Tucking into bed early so we can be up for tomorrow's Bluegrass Festival.

BHK has been excelling at boardgames lately, especially territory types like Othello(Reversi), Ponte del Diavolo , Just 4 Fun and as always, Pente(we both seem to prefer the 2 or 3-capture variant Keryo-Pente). I still am partial to Hexxagon, Hey-That's my Fish, and Carcassone H&G (She also is superb at those) - I'm really beginning to dig War of the Roses, which I wouldn't mind tweaking a bit into an Icehouse/treehouse game.

Speaking of games... Talisman is back? I wonder if they fixed some of the unbalancing aspects, or if they're remaining true to the original.

Virtually no homeless issues in North Beach... mainly because there's no support system here... however, I've noticed that there are many, many tent cities under the bridges in DC, especially near to the subway track zones. I had my first experience with a guy coming onto the subway, and doing the "may I have your attention, would someone please give me 25 cents so I can get a bus at the next stop?" - I hadn't seen that since riding the bus in Broward / Dade.

Trip to the doc implies some work to be done. Dentally, I need a mouthful of fillings. Elsewhere, I need to work on my weight, my allergies, my back and leg.

All things in time - Got a few fillings yesterday I need to do 2 or 3 more visits. the bridge and cracked tooth will be dealt with in January.

Random find. A solar-powered bible. Perfect for the Christian Castaway, I guess!

Oh, come on... now the smeller is blamed rather than the smelly? Stinky is in the nose of the sniffer? I'll leave out the almost obligatory sci-fi / gaming convention comment.

They set up the hay-bale spider at the pumpkin patch!!

Slept in until about 10, and then we toddled off to the Renfaire. Highlights of the day were Johnny Fox, Hack & Slash, Swami Yohmahmi, Horsemen, Bear-baiting and Witch Trial, and time at the Kadon games building again. BHK and I swapped off on taking pictures with the new camera - viewable here.

BHK got pulled into participation on two shows, as well - As Hack's Mom in the Cruel and Unusual Show, and face-spike examiner (she got to keep the spike - eww) at the Swami's. Also obtained was a Swami Yo sticker.

We looked at quite a few boardgames, but none grabbed us hard enough for an immediate purchase. I was a little disappointed in Y, (it seemed a bit limited) but Star may have some longer-term potential - maybe a bit too much like go, though. I'd say that my favorite of the wooden games so far is still Quintillions- I'm tempted to make my own set as well as purchase the original from the source. The Kadon people have some nifty plastic art/ game boards... I wouldn't mind commissioning a custom 8x8 volcano-type one with a frosted transparent bottom for playing sleestak/pylon icehouse games.

Food Sampled at the Fair by BHK and/or me -

Mac & Cheese on a stick.
BBQ Turkey on a bun (BHK only)
Deep-fried Oreos (I wonder how many days-worth of calories *that* was?)
Broccoli Cheese Soup in a bread bowl
[edit: Chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick!]
A ton of water / diet pepsi

Went right from the Rennfest to the in-laws for supper... like we could eat anything after all of that stuff... still, I managed a plate, sans seconds.

Tasty Falafel last night, despite BHK not feeling well.

Took her out tonight, glad that she's up to it... maybe a little cheeburger cheeburger and a road time will jump start her to feeling better for the weekend!

After a tasty garden-cheeburger, frings and cherry chocolate shake, we swung by the store and got her some new jeans, before making a very brief visit to eyeball Comics and Games and Stuff. (Courtesy of The Looney Labs store finder )

Dropped 12 for 3 very inexpensive games - Change! , Cosmic Coasters, and The Very Clever Pipe Game. All of which should be wonderful additions to our games closet, and are pretty small and portable, should we decide to take 'em with us somewhere.

Speaking of new, portable games, Eryx wrote us and mentioned that he's sending us a copy of EcoFluxx as a wedding present! Thanks Eryx! We need to steal him from the UK and have him visit sometime. :)

Also the Labs have recently produced Twin Win, an Icehouse game suitable for use while waiting in line.

Still in a Rennie sort of mood, we plopped Gamerz into the DVD player, and started with a movie. I think the film was good, but the shadowplay gaming sequences and the fact that they all had actual Scottish accents probably raised it up from three and a half to four stars out of five. I think that they fairly pegged a few of the internal workings of a game group pretty darn well - Perhaps more like EMAGE [the group with AP, RI, HI, BG, and RobbC more than the 90's group with GP, Kat, PM or alternates DougW, KathyW & DanC - with short termers of Kelly, DonM, Ed, RikL, RickC and Tony.]

HI (or now HG, I guess since she divorced RI married BG after becoming preggo with BG's kid *DRaaaahmaaaah*) -

The elf chick in the movie was a pretty entertaining blend of the more negative sides of H's flittery "look at me, I'm full of BS" and KathyW's "Look at my Character! It's me! I'm full of insanity" personality-wise. I could draw pretty solid connective lines to the others in that group, too, including myself.

Went on a fun drive hither and yon today... Went no place in particular, but discovered some new lands North and West of Baltimore. Nice time tooling around the Enchanted forest, where we took some photos (to follow later ) and I got a haircut at the Enchanted forest haircuttery... followed by a grilled cheese and pancakes for BHK and me at the Enchanted forest diner. Interesting place... I look forward to our follow up road trip to Elioak Farm, to see the refurbished elements. The food was good, but I suspect the grill hadn't been scraped since opening in 1957.

If you look carefully, you can see the sugar-cone cottage deep in the middle of kudzu forest.

We forgot to hit the DC game night - And they were playing Apples to Apples, Lunch Money and Zendo! I would really like to go to the next one, if it fits into our work / play schedule. It's a bit of a journey... Maybe 90 minutes or so - But for a Saturday of games and meeting a few new folks, it could be good!

I still need to swing by and check out the Maryland Gamers Annapolis location, too.

Swung by the in-laws and watched Hot Fuzz, and started Night at the Museum .. Bhk and I lost steam about 20 minutes into it, and headed home.

Rennfest was a hoot! Much larger venue than South Florida's, and more professionally done.

Highlights -
  • Kadon's Game Tent (I lost two games of Quint, and BHK picked up a deck of Fluxx 3.0) - they're the guys that make Volcano boards!
  • Hack & Slash - I got a long-sleeved Action Hero t-shirt, autographed by the guys.
  • (Good fellows and funny as all get out - They'll be there all weekends except 10/20-21)
  • Swami Yohmahmi
  • Museum of Unnatural History
  • Coin Mashing Stand... Thinking of a Hare and a Bear for either side of one.

Not to mention soft pretzels, saw assorted foods on a stick (but only ate aforementioned pretzel and a lot of water) and a beautiful wooded location.

I think I especially liked it because it was just BHK and me, having fun. No herding cats, no phone calls, nothing... just grabbed a bagel and go!

After, we hit Susquido's for white pizza, extra garlic with a Caesar salad and fried Zucchini. Yum. (Zukes were not nearly as good as BHK's homemade recipe)

assorted recent kitty cuteness

Renfest pics - taken with BHK's rapidly expiring camera.

Hm, Discovered the DC Game Night lj community (also Chez_turtle) . Possibly a go for Sunday side of our walkabout weekend? (since we have Monday off.) - Then again, there's always TCEP14. There's a schedule online now, too. I suspect that I'd prefer the informal local game night to a con, but who knows? I figure that I'd prefer a more casual setting with an informal group.

Anyone that developed vegan Cupcakes of Catan is ok in my book.

Of course, there's the Rennfest, too.

Good grief! So many possibilities.

Maybe I'll work a bit on Guitar / Uke skills while BHK is off with TM whenever they decide to head out. I guess that there's a tentative thought about them going to Delaware. What's to do in Delaware?

Editing the wiki and the lab rabbit wiki has introduced me to an interesting assortment of people... some seem very laid back, others aggressive to the point of being interpreted as hostile. There are some impatient and controlling types in every bunch... sometimes that's what it takes to get things done, I suppose. Not my style, but I can see where it would be a winning tactic on a wiki. Both are pretty solid resources.

(I've even gone so far as to create a lj-feed of recent changes on the rabbit site so that I can track it on my lj, rather than having to log in and sniff around somewhere else. I've just now done the same to the icehousegames wiki too)

Chewing through a very solid work week - A lot of items on the desk to weed through. SQL is taking top priority, given our release date, but there are a lot of items to deal with from various aspects of the web site to planning budgets.

It's a pretty challenging gig, and I like it like that. Not a lot of time to learn, but learn-as-you-go seems to be the rule for any tech thing nowadays.

Not enough code to worry about at work? Here's some icehouse game java in the works, too. I'm not even going to look at that stuff until sometime in 2008, most likely - after crunch time at the office.

Taco night with the in-laws and BHK's longtime pal Lucas (edit - LUKE! NOT LUC!) - he's in town for a span before going off to NY or CA for work. I hope we get to have him over a few more nights before he launches - perhaps he'll be interested in playing some parlor games in addition to any chick flicks that he and BHK both seem to dig.

I am very weary tonight - hitting the sack early. I don't know if it's the rainy weather, or what, but I've been feeling a need to snooze. I'm all for cool, misty days, and if a little sleepiness is a result, that's ok, too. I think that I may be a bit tired due to a lack of unwinding when I first got home... I'll try to kick off my shoes and change into some play clothes a bit sooner tomorrow.

Saw our "whatever" sort of bird of prey in our backyard... still sans camera, so a animated drawing will have to suffice.
